A run to the World Series would not be complete without a lucky animal to share it with, and the San Francisco Giants have continued the tradition this postseason. Just when it appeared that the Giants would be sent packing by the defending champion Cardinals as they trailed 3-1 in the NLCS, a lucky monkey was born. San Francisco has not lost since.

The baby monkey — more specifically a François’s langur — was born at the San Francisco Zoo earlier this month and like other members of its species it has an orange head and a black body. An endangered species, the François’s langur is born with an orange head that will turn black like the rest of its body within three to six months. Fortunately for the city of San Francisco, that means this baby will be sporting team colors for the remainder of the series.

“Things have turned literally since she’s been born,” zoo spokesperson Abigail Tuller said, adding that the baby appears to perk up when she sees people who are sporting Giants logos.

The monkey has not yet been named, but a sign hangs in front of the San Francisco Zoo that reads “Lucky Langur lives here.” Last season, the Cardinals credited a squirrel that ran across the field (video here) during the playoffs for becoming their good luck charm. The squirrel was later featured on a baseball card and even engraved into the side of the Cardinals World Series rings. If the Giants hold on and beat the Tigers, the next animal to end up on a championship ring could very well be a monkey.

Will Lincecum end up in the bullpen?

Despite struggling in the regular season, the two-time Cy Young winner has done well coming out of the bullpen in the playoffs, and the Giants might be best suited keeping him there.

Madison Bumgarner Carries Giants to 2-0 Series Lead

Last night, Madison Bumgarner finally found a groove, tossing seven scoreless innings en route to a 2-0 Giants victory. You’ll hear a lot — or, scratch that, have probably already heard a lot — about how Bumgarner didn’t have his best stuff last night, and I think that’s pretty fair to say. Despite the mechanical adjustments he made prior to the outing, his fastball didn’t...

Parking at Game 1 of World Series in San Francisco ran upwards of $130 (photo)

Anyone who attends sporting events are already well aware that the cost of parking one’s vehicle nearby the stadium is borderline ludicrous and oftentimes highway robbery. Still, as the photo above abundantly illustrates, combining a big-time event like the World Series with limited parking space in an urban area along with an early local start [...]
PERILS OF LIVE TV

Bird poops on anchor outside AT&T Park

It may somehow mean good luck to the San Francisco Giants, but Paul Robins is the one who took it for the team after a bird pooped on the local TV anchor while he and Bethany Crouch were doing a live pre-World Series broadcast outside AT&T Park Thursday. Yes — and Robins is his real name. The Sacramento-based KTXL morning show anchor took a direct hit to his shoulder from...

Xavier Nady is two wins away from a World Series ring

Nothing says "Fall Classic" like a Xavier Nady sighting prior to World Series Game 2. Pic above via @JohnJDevine. Seems like only yesterday Nady was a member of the Goon Squad and inspiration for ridiculous photoshops. Not that he didn't have his moments of personal glory with the Nationals, like that shaving cream pie to the face from Mike Morse after his 100th career...

Panda has memorable night in Game 1

Pablo Sandoval won a World Series ring in 2010, but not the way he wanted to. That was the year his weight ballooned while his playing time shrank. He appeared in only one game of that Fall Classic against the Texas Rangers -- and went 0-for-3. After Tuesday, he's no longer looking for his first World Series hit. An overweight afterthought in 2010, Sandoval needed only one...

Could a François’s langur monkey be the key to the San Francisco Giants success?

Good luck charms and the World Series seems to be connected. Last season the Cardinals had a squirrel that randomly ran across the field, the San Francisco Giants seem to have a acquired a baby monkey. The Giants were behind to the Cardinals 3-1  in the NLCS, when the monkey, a François’s langur was born at [...]

Pablo Sandoval: Good at hitting balls out of the ballpark — in the postseason (video)

After hitting only 12 home runs during the regular season, San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval belted out three round-trippers — in his first three at-bats (with the first two coming off Justin Verlander) — Wednesday night in Game 1 of the World Series against the Detroit Tigers, finishing the game 4-4. Saying, “Man, [...]

Column: Big ball, small ball, Giants have it all

The bunt just wouldn't go foul, despite the best efforts of the Detroit players who gathered around it and tried to will it across the chalk down the third base line. It couldn't go foul, because that might have ruined the whole aura the San Francisco Giants spent two games creating on their way toward taking command of this World Series. Gregor Blanco thought he had pulled...

Fister, Bumgarner engage in pitching duel: Giants defeat Tigers to take a two game lead in World Series

San Francisco Giants’ Madison Bumgarner was looking for a turn- around performance after getting lit up for six runs against the St. Louis Cardinals 12 days ago. He got that, and he came up big. Bumgarner went seven strong innings of 2- hit ball, while striking out eight Tigers batters and holding them scoreless. Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher Doug Fister continued his postseason...

Tigers head home in 0-2 World Series hole

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Madison Bumgarner pitched two-hit ball over seven innings, Brandon Crawford drove in the go-ahead run with a double-play grounder after a key bunt stopped just fair along the third-base line and the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Thursday night to take a 2-0 World Series lead. Bumgarner, who lost both his starts in the NL playoffs, struck...

2012 World Series: Did Detroit Tigers Blow Must Win Chance With Game 1 Loss to San Francisco Giants?

The 2012 World Series is one game in, and it was not the start that the Detroit Tigers were expecting against the San Francisco Giants. Sending Justin Verlander to the mound is almost always a must win scenario for the Tigers, especially in a postseason series. Having him go up against Barry Zito seemed to make things even more attractive, as Zito hasn’t really been all that playoff...

Phil Jackson: Spurs are not a dynasty

Phil Jackson is calling the shots for the Knicks as their new team president and it looks like he’s taking shots at an old Western Conference foe. Jackson has been taking jabs at the San Antonio Spurs since 1999, when the then newly signed Lakers coach suggested that the Spurs championship should have an asterisk next to it because it occurred during a lockout shortened season...

Michael Pineda ejected after pine tar was found on his neck

After cameras caught Michael Pineda using an egregious amount of pine tar (or, according to Pineda, “dirt”) on his palm against the Red Sox earlier this month, he tried to pull the same schtick again on Wednesday night at Fenway. Unfortunately for Pineda, John Farrell is not dumb enough to be fooled twice. Pineda was ejected from the game in the second inning after Farrell asked...

NFL Sunday night flex scheduling to start in Week 5

The NFL must have taken notes from the fans last season, as the plethora of horrible Sunday night games had fans yawning all year long. That’s about to change, as flex scheduling will begin in week 5 instead of week 11 this season, ensuring quality games every Sunday night for a large majority of the 2014 campaign. A tweet from Adam Schefter comfirmed the change: Big change: Sunday...

Stone Cold Steve Austin spoke out in favor of gay marriage

Stone Cold Steve Austin was born in Texas, and the beer-guzzling bad ass has always been proud of it. As most of you know, Texas is not one of the 17 US states where gay marriage is legal. Apparently Stone Cold has formed his own opinions on same-sex marriage, because the WWE star has no […]
