A rare 1987 Donruss rookie PSA Barry Bonds baseball card signed by the player himself is available on eBay. What makes this card special — besides the former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder's signature — it that it comes with a few words of wisdom, Say No To Drugs, scrawled across the card by Bonds himself.

The same signed card — which usually goes for about $125 — is now going for an asking price of $100,000 because of the ironic nature of those four words.

The seller, who actually goes by bonds_autograph, claims “This card represents the most unique and ironic collectible available for the polarizing star.” He also says the card has been verified by PSA.

The price of the card — with a photo of the much-less buff Bonds and those prophetic words — soars because of the irony factor. But a hundred grand?!

  • Who cares. Bonds is a joke and has been since around 1993. you can burn the card cause it aint worth a crap as far as I'm concerned.

He ruined his name and his respect for baseball and doesn't deserve to be any where near the hall.

A 100k for his card, really...only a dumb mutha would pay that. Just because of what was wrote on the card don't make him an athlete and especially because he was a doper himself.

This completely discusts me. another POS athlete that rakes in dollars for something he COULDNT do on his own without dope.

Flippin doper bonds, you suck. He is no STAR by any means.
  • "Burn the card?" Really? Not worth anything? I disagree. Of course it's worth something! It's worth learning a sad lesson from at the least!

Though it is quite a shame when Heroes dishonor their good name by failing our expectations of them and showing their regrettable humanity when we wanted them to be superhuman, we should not be too quick to tear down all their history or to strike their name from every list, to let their whole legacy be forgotten and their entire house be left to the same ash that people whose names aren't remembered are stuck with. That's a bit of a melodramatic way of putting it sure, and I'm not saying sugar-coat the histories. I'm not saying leave out the truth. I'm just saying that instead of tearing down monuments and completely turning our backs on the people we idolize...we just need to ruefully, mornfully carve yet more words at the bottom of stories, explaining what really happened. But the names should be remembered. The Heroes can become Tragic, Realistic Heroes if they have to stop being Super Heroes. And we can still have them be markers of History. And that would mean that Historical Artifacts that have a connection to those characters would still be worth keeping in museums and valuing highly.

Achilles, for example, is practically the opposite of a good moral role model, but if anyone discovered a sword buried in the sand with Achilles' and Hector's names on it in Achilles' forge-writing (I know it would be impossible to say it was a genuine article, even if such a thing were found- humour me and go along with the spirit of the example) would we melt down such a sword because Achilles was a raging monster not worthy of honor, or would we keep the sword in a glass case because even the Infamous individuals should be remembered alongside the famous ones?

Be angry at cheating athletes all you want, but remember their names, and put them in books, and sell their collectibles for ridiculous prices, and keep alive what the Villains of History have to teach us, hoping that the people listening to your story decide not to be like that when they grow up.

Forgetting and Burning the bad histories only make them more likely to be repeated. It's an attempt to punish out of revenge and resent, but it's not a good or helpful attitude in the long run. Barry Bonds used to be a Star. Now he's a Fallen Star. Let's Celebrate the Star, Mourn the Fall, and Remember the whole thing Truthfully.

Maybe the Irony and Tragedy of this card symbolizing a dream being shattered...maybe it will become a rallying symbol for all the causes to clean up cheating and drugs out of all the sports? Wouldn't that be something? It wouldn't be able to completely undo the damage done, but it would be a little ray of silver lining on a cloud, y'know? I mean sure, what are the chances of that happening. But, people have to dream against the odds, because dreaming with the odds isn't a dream worth fighting for.

The Pirates’ new starting lineup video is hilarious

The PNC Park jumbotron has introduced the Pirates’ lineup with some strange and cheesy videos in the past (such as this one), but when I saw this new one on Youtube I couldn’t stop laughing: So much awkwardness. Some players (Gaby Sanchez) embraced the silly Saturday Night Live theme, some (Pedro Alvarez and Clint Barmes) clearly wanted nothing to do with it, and some (Wandy...

Andrew McCutchen, Pirates Introduce Themselves in ‘Saturday Night Live’-Style Clip (Video)

The Pittsburgh Pirates are winning and have tons of young, exciting players. So, naturally, they’ve decided to a video mashup introducing themselves Saturday Night Live-style. Andrew McCutchen and Co. (or whoever the Pirates have working in their video room) spared no expense to make their presentation look like Saturday’s No. 1 sketch comedy show (because it’s the only Saturday...

Francisco Liriano to make debut for Pirates on May 11

Fransisco Liriano is scheduled to make his season debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 11. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle delivered the news to reporters on Wednesday. Liriano signed a one year deal with the Pirates in the offseason but has been working his way back from a fractured right arm. The pitcher reportedly injured himself while trying to scare his kids on Christmas morning...

Pittsburgh Pirates Entertaining 'SNL-Style' Lineup Video

It has been a long time since the Pittsburgh Pirate fan base has had a lot to cheer about. Maybe that is why the Pirates opted to announce their lineup in a rather creative way fashioned after Saturday Night Live's opening credits. I'll give them points for being different then pretty much every other baseball team out there, but maybe--just maybe--the money could...

Prospect Trends: Some Turnarounds and Some Struggling Altoona Hitters

Nick Kingham fanned 26 in his last 17 innings. A month into the minor league season, things are starting to take shape with the Pirates’ full-season affiliates.  With a deep roster and very talented pitching staff, Indianapolis is dominating the International League with a 20-7 record.  By contrast, Altoona is increasingly struggling despite a good rotation led by Jameson Taillon...

Pittsburgh Pirates Designate Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated pitcher Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. Struggling mightily all season, his final straw was throwing at St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig. His suitors will be thin and it just goes to show that if you are struggling, you shouldn’t give the source of your good income a great reason to get rid of you. The post Pittsburgh Pirates...

Pittsburgh Pirates do SNL Style Player Introductions (Video)

The Pittsburgh Pirates have finally done something that will get them some much needed publicity, it has nothing to do with what their doing on the baseball diamond, but it’s a start. According to USA Today Sports, the 16-12 Pirates have a unique way of doing their player introductions, adopting a late-night television vibe in the mold of Saturday Night Live or David Letterman...

Pirates 6, Brewers 4

THOSE were the Pirates we came to know and love during the past few weeks. After falling behind yet again at Miller Park, the Bucs pulled off a big comeback and managed to shut Milwaukee down late to get out of Wisconsin with a rare victory. Jeanmar Gomez‘s start went about how most expected it to go. He labored early on and only managed to go four innings and gave up a couple...

Aeros hold off late comeback from Altoona, win 5-4

ALTOONA- Despite a late comeback bid from Altoona, the Akron Aeros were able to secure their 12th win of the season 5-4. Altoona started their late inning rally in the eighth off of Aeros pitcher Bryce Stowell. After Stowell got Curve shortstop Drew Maggi to ground out to first baseman Chun Chen, centerfielder Mel Rojas doubled and gave Altoona their first base runner. Left...

Bo Jackson, a Will Clark Fight, and a few other sweet baseball videos

I love baseball but watch games very infrequently. I’m more of a fantasy baseball, watch Baseball Tonight and MLB Network highlights, stat nerd type of fan (which could stem from me rooting for the Pirates). Here are 5 baseball videos that entertained me. Will Clark fights Ozzie Smith and Jose Oquendo Back in the day baseball fights used to be so much better. Unless Kyle Farnsworth...

Brewers 12, Pirates 8

There are two primary types of Pirates losses in Milwaukee. The first was the one you saw on Monday, when the Bucs just get blown out. Tuesday was different, but just as painful. The Bucs took advantage of whatever makes Miller Park so great to hit in and crushed several homers of their own, but as usual they were outgunned and lost in a long, back-and-forth battle. James McDonald...

Minor League Schedule: 5/1/13

Bradenton’s game last night was suspended in the seventh inning with the score tied 4-4 and Brevard County batting. The game will resume today, prior to the start of the regularly scheduled game. West Virginia was off yesterday. Indianapolis has off today. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We have added a...

Game 26: Brewers 10 Pirates 4

I want to say that nothing went right in this game, but that's not true in the strictest sense. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then nothing went right from there. Wandy Rodriguez couldn't find the strike zone in the first inning and when he had a chance to get out of the inning with the Pirates still only down 2-1, Clint Barmes booted a double...

The punt game

Long story short: the lock at my apartment got jammed shut last night and no one answered the emergency maintenance number, so I couldn't get into my apartment and as a result didn't see much of last night's game besides Rickie Weeks's homer that sealed the deal for Milwaukee. There were home runs, bad pitching, the Pirates lost at Miller Park. Frankly, I've heard...

Winston: Manziel had much tougher fan base than FSU

Here is the screen grab, via i.imgur: Roenick is no stranger to feuds, but very rarely do we see someone strike back at him. Grabovski’s poke at Roenick wasn’t as good as Patrick Roy, who once destroyed Roenick, but...
