PLAYERS: Shaun Marcum
TEAMS: New York Mets

Via The Last Angry Fan:

Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum enjoys bowling in his spare time, and I think it’s safe to assume that the right-hander is pretty good at it too, seeing that the incredibly cool, red-eyed skull with a hole in its head bowling ball being shown off is the one he uses strictly for picking up spares, according to Mets PR man Jay Horowitz.

If that’s the one Marcum uses just for spares, I wonder what his strike ball looks like? It probably contains the heart of a grizzly bear that he killed with his bare hands or something. If intimidation is a huge factor in bowling, then Shaun Marcum and his menacing bowling ball have it in spades.

  • It is obvious this writer knows nothing about the sport of bowling and seems to be condescending towards it. There are several athletes from the MLB, NBA, NFL, NASCAR and others who enjoy the sport of bowling.

It appears the Mets pitcher does understand the game as he has a spare ball, but the "coolness" of the equipment does not mean you are an adequate bowler. You can buy the best of equipment out there and still suck.

Shaun Marcum And The Shaky Nature Of The Mets’ Pitching Staff

It seems hardly a day goes by when we don’t hear about a player of at least moderate importance to his team sustaining an injury. Someone is forever being “shut down” for a few days or more. Shaun Marcum has intense skull bowling ball he uses just for spares (Picture)

New York Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum is apparently an avid bowler. He must be pretty good, too. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the only types of bowlers who have a ball specifically for spares and a ball specifically for strikes are the good ones. According to Mets PR man Jay Horwitz, that thing that looks like a skull frozen into a ball of ice is the ball Marcum uses...

Photo: Shaun Marcum has one terrifying bowling ball

New York Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum isn't known to be an intimidating guy, but his bowling ball sure is.Apparently, the 31-year-old is an avid bowler, who uses a terrifying ball that is sure to put the fear of God in any pin which stands in its way.As Jay Horwitz of the Mets' public relations department notes, Marcum only uses this ball in particular for spare situations...

Shaun Marcum Added To Mets’ Injury List; Long Season Already Here

The worst-case scenario seems imminent for the Mets. They faced a myriad of pitching questions entering spring training, including: Johan Santana’s availability after shoulder surgery; Dillon Gee coming off surgery to repair an injury to his shoulder; and injury-prone Shaun Marcum. All three have been answered in the negative. One would think a free agent would report to camp in...

With Marcum on the mend, Mets rotation may be muddled

With reports earlier in the week suggesting that Johan Santana would not be ready to make his Opening Day start for the New York Mets, it was thought that Jon Niese would be likely to slide into his spot.  Santana has taken the ball for New York on Opening Day four of the past five seasons, but shoulder issues have left him unable to pitch for two weeks.  The 34-year-old lefty...

Mets 7, Astros 5

Shaun Marcum gave the Mets another pitcher to worry about. Alex White could be the answer to the Astros' Marcum headed to New York for a cortisone shot in his right shoulder while the Mets were beating the Houston Astros 7-5 Wednesday. Manager Terry Collins expects the right-hander to return for another spring training start early next week. ''He said he gets it every...

Santana To Stay Back; Wright, Marcum Updates

The Mets finally confirmed the obvious and said Johan Santana won’t be on the Opening Day roster. Considering he hadn’t thrown since his look-at-me-I’m-angry stunt, March 6, there was no suspense to this move. “He’s not where he needs to be in his long-toss program,’’ manager Terry Collins told reporters in one of spring trainings’ biggest understatements. “Even...

Mets Have Habit Of Placating Pitchers For The Worst

What is it with the Mets and their starting pitchers? Giving them near total control hasn’t worked. It didn’t for Willie Randolph and Jerry Manuel, and it isn’t for Terry Collins. The impression is the tail is wagging the dog when it comes to Mets’ starters, and this isn’t new. Pitchers tend to be divas by nature, but it has gone to another level with the Mets. MARCUM:...
