Charlie Petredis is a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan and once worked as a vendor at the old Three Rivers Stadium way back when. Back in 1992 — the last time the Pirates were in the MLB postseason — Petredis promised his son Charlie Jr., then a toddler, that if and when the Pirates ever returned to the playoffs, he would don pirate garb and wear it proudly to a game.

Petredis certainly didn’t think — or better put, hope — that the Buccos’ postseason drought would last so long. But it is what it is, and the lessons he tried to instill in his son about being a dedicated Pirates fan all those years ago remain as true today as they did then, so Petredis made good on his promise, going full-on pirate as he attended Tuesday’s wild card game along with Charlie Jr., now 25.

People from Pittsburgh rocking the most absurdly yinzer jerseys you’ll ever see

Today is like Christmas, New Years, and Donny Iris birthday all rolled into one for yinzers in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are in the playoffs for the first time since 1992 and there is a buzz in the air like a night out with Aldon Smith. To help celebrate this once in every 21 year occasion I have put together the most absurdly yinzer gallery of Pirates and Steelers jerseys FROM THE...

Pirates In Postseason After 21 Year Drought

Insert your favorite talk-like-a-pirate expression here, the Pittsburgh Pirates are in the playoffs. The last time this happened, George Bush Sr. was in the White House and a gallon of gas cost about a buck-fifteen. The year was 1992. The Pirates went on to lose the Pennant in game seven to the Braves and the Blue Jays would go on to win the World Series. History lesson over....

Pirates beat Reds in NL wild-card

The Pittsburgh Pirates went 21 years between playoff games. The wait will be significantly shorter this time around. Russell Martin homered twice, Francisco Liriano was dominant for seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates roared past Cincinnati for a 6-2 victory in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night. In front of a black-clad crowd savoring its first postseason game since 1992...

Francisco Liriano’s Dominating Slider

One of the oldest cliches in baseball is that pitchers have to establish their fastball. The average Major League pitcher throws their fastball about 60% of the time, and any deviation from that can get you labeled a junkballer. Francisco Liriano, with the Pirates season on the line, told that cliche to go pound sand. Here are his final pitch tallies for the night, per PITCHF...

Pirates 6, Reds 2

That. Was. Incredible. The Pirates are moving on to the NLDS after defeating the Reds in the wildest, most emotional, powerful sports environment you will ever witness. After being a part of it, I’m confident that is not hyperbole. This was an absolutely epic evening that no Pirate fan will ever forget. The blackout – which was a tremendous success. The countless rousing ovations...

A few considerations for a one game playoff

In the last few days, I've posted links to a couple of wild card game strategy pieces (FanGraphs, Beyond the Box Score). Both of the articles mainly advocate that the Pirates use as many pitchers as possible, both to maximize results from starters like Francisco Liriano and Gerrit Cole (that is, knowing that they'd throw fewer pitches they could theoretically be more effective...

Today in Sports History – First Baseball World Series

On this day in 1903, the National and American Leagues began the process of co-existing, ending two years of unnecessary fighting off the field. The first World Series featured the Boston Americans of the American League facing off against the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League in a best-of-nine format. Boston won the series 5-3, winning four straight games after being down...

Pirates defeat Reds 6-2 to advance to NLDS

The Pittsburgh Pirates' 2013 Postseason run will last more than one game. The Pirates won the Wild Card playoff game 6-2 over the Cincinnati Reds, advancing to the NL Division Series against the St Louis Cardinals. Pittsburgh jumped all over Johnny Cueto early, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning thanks to solo homers by Marlon Byrd and Russell Martin. The inning...

NL Wild Card preview: Reds vs. Pirates

Following Monday's AL tiebreaker game, the MLB postseason begins Tuesday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Pirates host the Reds for a one-game, do-or-die playoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET. It's the first playoff baseball Pittsburgh has seen in 20 years, and Bucs fans surely hope this postseason lasts longer than one game. The Reds suffered a crushing defeat in last year...

Cardinals 9, Pirates 1

Well, it turns out this postseason thing isn’t always as fun as it was for Bucs fans on Tuesday night. Today the Pirates had the tables turned on them, and the Cardinals were the ones enjoying an easy victory to the delight of the home fans. The difference, of course, is that it wasn’t a one game playoff and the Pirates will have the opportunity to bounce back in a matter of...

Pirates-Reds and the Madness of the Crowd

First and foremost, the atmosphere was electric. The Pirates hadn’t hosted a post-season game in 21 years, and their fans were in a mood to party. They chanted, they cheered, they hoisted cans of Iron City. Most were adorned in black, but they didn’t come for a funeral. In the end, it was Cincinnati’s season that died. Pittsburgh won 6-2 and will go on to face St. Louis in...

NL Wild Card: Can the Pirates Get Past the Reds?

The Pirates haven't hosted a playoff game since 1992. For Pirates fans, the excruciating wait comes to an end tonight as their hometown club plays host to the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Wild Card elimination game.  All it took was winning 8-3 on Saturday against, you guessed it, the Cincinnati Reds. After securing their first winning season and playoff appearance...

13 Stats from Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2013 playoff win over Cincinnati Reds

Pittsburgh took down the Cincinnati Reds in the wild card round for the Pirates’ first playoff win since 1992. Here are 13 insane stats from their 2013 wild card win.

NLDS Preview: Of course it's the Cardinals

TOn September 27, 2006, two friends of mine and I went down to PNC Park for a Pirates/Astros game. The season was beyond over for the Pirates; they were 65-92 headed into the game and they were already five games into what was ended up being an eight-game losing streak. The Astros were in the middle of a desperate run at a collapsing Cardinal team; they'd won seven in a row to...

(Credit: csmonitor) Tim Tebow is one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in the history of college football, and he enjoyed a brief stint of success with the Denver Broncos in the NFL. However, he was cut from the New England Patriots before the start of the 2013 season, and has been out of the league ever since. Despite this, Tebow has kept training in hopes that a team will give...

Josh Gordon has reportedly passed 'at least 70 drug tests'

We found out recently that Josh Gordon hired Richard Sherman’s lawyer to help handle his appeal with the NFL. In that case Maurice Suh called into question the specimen collection process and created doubt around the “he-said, he-said” case between the player and the collector. Now, Pro Football Talk is reporting what Josh Gordon’s strategy heading into the appeal on August...

Pete Carroll on Lynch holdout: 'It's a contract for a reason'

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll sounded much like general manager John Schneider on running back Marshawn Lynch's holdout. The team's brass seems to be more irritated than concerned over Lynch's contract demands and quite frankly have let it be known they won't be bullied into giving the rusher a new deal. "It's a contract for a reason. We made a...
