PLAYERS: Jim Leyland
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers

Via It's Always Sunny in Detroit:

Tigers’ skipper Jim Leyland isn’t the only one who likes to light up in the dugout.  Thanks to a Michigan smoking ban back in 2010, Leyland has to find another way to fulfill his urge.

Rangers manager Ron Washington is more fortunate (if you can call it that). On Sunday the camera caught Wash mid-puff. Our legal team is checking out whether Washington was breaking any laws at the time. But our human element tells us that the dugout is no place to be blowing nastiness in peoples’ faces.  Of course, we know about Washington’s past cocaine problems, so at least this is a lesser form of addiction.  But it still doesn’t belong in the dugout.

Get the patch, Ron.

  • Seriously, you are going to put your legal team on an incident like this? He's a grown man, if he wants to puff on a cig in a big stadium, let him. If your concerned with the health of the players in the dugout, last time I checked they are all adults and could say something to the coach about his smoking bothering them and besides they make plenty of money to afford decent health insurance!!!! You're legal team needs to get a life!
  • He can't smoke but they can all chew that nasty smelling gross looking tobacco? really!!! come on....its his choice and more power to him for enjoying it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! smoke 'em if you got 'em
  • This is just a stupid subject. He's a grown man. Years ago it looked like the dugout was on fire with all the guys smoking. Put your legal team on something worthwhile like finding Manti Teo's girlfriend.
  • As Wash the Great once said; "that's the way baseball go" FN idoit.

Valverde returning as Tigers closer

The Detroit Tigers recently signed Jose Valverde and sent him to the minor leagues, and they've already called him up to close.

Dotel to DL; Rondon called up to Tigers

Bruce Rondon is headed to Detroit. The highly-touted closer prospect will take the place of Octavio Dotel, who was placed on 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to April 20 -- list because of inflammation in his throwing arm. Tigers manager Jim Leyland told CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler that Rondon wasn't called up to be used in the ninth inning, although he might eventually...

Ron Washington Will Smoke a Cigarette In The Dugout If He Wants To

I haven’t seen a MLB coach smoke a cigarette in the dugout for some time, but it has happened and Ron Washington the always fun manager of the Nationals is the culprit.  As ‘It’s Always Sunny In Detroit‘ points out, Jim Leyland was the last manager to light up and that was in 2010.  No judgement here Ron, just be careful as the kiddos around the world may see this. Article...

Detroit Tigers Recall Young Phenom Bruce Rondon

MLB News: The Detroit Tigers recalled Bruce Rondon on Tuesday from Triple-A Toledo to fill the void left when the organization had to place Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation  Rondon will fill in for late inning relief and depending on how things go, could eventually win the closer’s job outright with the Tigers. Fantasy Ramifications: While...

Tigers’ Octavio Dotel could require trip to DL

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel continues to deal with inflammation in his throwing elbow. It’s limited his availability and impacted his effectiveness so far this season, and it could ultimately require a stint on the disabled list, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Dotel told reporters that the inflammation in his elbow is lingering, and that...

Bruce Rondon Recalled by Detroit Tigers; Octavio Dotel Lands on 15-Day DL

The Detroit Tigers’ closer of the future is headed to the big-league club. Bruce Rondon, who entered spring as the heir apparent to Jose Valverde as the team’s ninth-inning man, has been recalled by the Tigers with reliever Octavio Dotel landing on the 15-day DL due to elbow soreness. Dotel has been dealing with elbow inflammation since an April 12 appearance against the A...

Prince Fielder's home run swing in slow motion

Let's not relive old bad memories, but Prince Fielder hit a home run this past weekend and someone slowed it down for us to touch ourselves to. Seriously, this is like softcore porn:   Arousing.

Anatomy of two really bad starts

Rick Porcello of the Tigers and Philip Humber of the Houston Astros both made starts yesterday for their respective teams. To say that those starts did not go well is like saying that a glacier might move slowly. Between the two of them, they totaled one inning pitched. Combined, they gave up seventeen runs. Now that, folks, is a bad day. Let us start with Rick Porcello. Porcello...

Detroit Tigers week in review: week 3

Week three of the 2013 season was not a very good week for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers got swept by the Los Angeles Angels of California or Anaheim or whatever they are called these days. They are on a four game losing streak and the offense has gone stone cold. Add to that a [...]

Brayan Pena is grace personified

The ball was actually booted before he started his dive, which of course makes it all the better.

40 Strikeouts in One Game? Are You Kidding Me?

Fantasy owners had to be going nuts over this game--that is if you had one of the pitchers in it. On Wednesday the pitching staffs for the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners combined for 40 strikeouts with both starters notching 12 a piece. Prince Fielder led the way with 9Ks in the three game series. Now it did take them 14 innings to set that mark, but 40 Ks between...

Jim Leyland excited for Jose Valverde’s return to Tigers

The Detroit Tigers welcomed back Jose Valverde Tuesday, six months after the team bid farewell to the closer, signing him to a one-year Major League Baseball deal. Valverde will be the Tigers closer if the they take a lead

Ron Washington Caught Smoking In Dugout During Game (Video)

RELAX! It’s not quite what you may have thought initially. Yes, Ron Washington has a very long history of drug abuse, but never fear, it was just a cigarette…at least that’s kinda what it appears to be. Washington’s a pretty old school guy so there’s been speculation that the cigarette was hand rolled, hence the irregular look to it. Tv cameras popped the Texas...

Tigers call up Valverde, annouce him as closer

The Detroit Tigers have promoted Jose Valverde to the major league roster. In a surprise move, Tigers manager Jim Leyland considered Leyland the teams closer. Valverde was signed by the Tigers earlier this month after the team denied interest in their former closer. With the promotion to the major league roster, Valverde will take over the role previously occupried by Joaquin Benoit...
RUMORS & GOSSIP

Are the San Francisco 49ers in store for a blowup season?

On the surface you could look at all the recent success for the San Francisco 49ers and easily assume they’re well on their way to being perennial contenders for a long time to come. But despite their 36-11-1 record over the last three years which included a Super Bowl trip in 2012 and NFC Championship game appearances in both 2011 and 2013 under Jim Harbaugh, the team seems to...

PHOTO: Astros prospect takes fastball to the face

Corpus Christi’s OF Delino DeShields Jr. had a rough night. The son of former Cubs second baseman/outfielder (DeShields Sr.) took a 90 mph fastball to the right side of his face during the seventh inning of a Double-A game. He went down for a brief spell, but was able to walk off on […]

Is Miguel Cabrera this generation’s Hank Aaron?

On June 20, 2003, Miguel Cabrera struck out in his first big league at bat.  He’d get the last laugh however. In the bottom of the eleventh inning the 20-year-old rookie hit a two-run home run to help his then-Florida Marlins to a 3-1 victory over the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Now, I bring that up only to awkwardly segue into this. Friday, the reigning American League MVP turned...

Furthermore, reports say Woodson would prefer Jackson and the Knicks fire him via his agent or phone call. On Wednesday, the coach said he’d like a resolution on...

WWE upset with Nancy Grace over Warrior death coverage

HLN Video Hey, remember when The Ultimate Warrior died and Nancy Grace brought on Diamond Dallas Page to openly suggest Warrior died from steroids, brought in totally unrelated doctor who said things like “anabolic steroids are probably used by 1% of Americans,” then put together a list of wrestlers who died young to suggest Owen Hart died from drugs?
