The San Diego Padres have moved their AAA franchise from Tucson to El Paso. This isn't shocking, considering that the Padres moved the same franchise to Tucson from Portland following the 2010 season. But the name chosen for the new franchise is already rubbing fans the wrong way - the El Paso Chihuahuas.

The four other finalists in the "name the team" voting were Aardvarks, Buckaroos, Desert Gators, and Sun Dogs, none of which are much better than Chihuahuas. According to team GM Brad Taylor, the name was chosen because Chihuahuas are "represent fun and are fiercely loyal," as if that makes any sense. More from Taylor below the cut.

"El Pasoans played a significant role in identifying our new team name -- they attended focus groups, suggested several hundred different names, and voted in record numbers for all the names," said Alan Ledford, president of MountainStar Sports Group.

"Through the entire [branding] process, our focus was on fun and on finding something that could appeal to kids," added Taylor. "You have to believe in the brand, and stand by it, because the brand isn't just something that people hear -- it's something they see."

Oh my, this won't end well. Fans on Twitter are lambasting the name, and I have a feeling the cries are only going to get stronger in the morning.

7 Comments:
  • Sounds like the Illegal Mexicans had the say so on this Chihuahuas name.

Should be named Illegal Immigrants, and they are loyal to no one.
  • Typical comment from ignorant piece of crap. Go back to your trailer and hook up with your cousins.
  • Might as well have named them the El Paso Prairie Rats. Chihuahua isn't much more than a rat. Pretty lousy name for a baseball team, but then...it IS the Padres organization we're talking about here...not a lot of bright spots in that organization.
  • I find this offensive to hispanics.
  • "Something that could appeal to kids"...OK...a ferocious looking growling Chihuahua fits that description?

I think their focus groups played a joke on them.
Maybe a case of not seeing the forest for the trees?

  • El Paso is nothing more than North Juarez. It isn't even truly Texas and New Mexico sure as hell don't want it. Where else can a city of over 1.2 million (Juarez is 1.6m) come up with such a lame ass name. No one asked me what I wanted the name to be and if it was advertised, it must have only been on Telemundo. Baseball will never catch on here. Neither will American football...just ask the UTEP Miners. Baseball has NEVER worked in this God forsaken place. Ask anyone who supported the (now defunct) El Paso Diablos and their home field "Cohen Stadium", which is scheduled to be leveled to make way for a kiddie water park. If "they" would bring in MLS (soccer), it would take off like crazy. Soccer (futbol/fussball) is friggin global. Duh, El Paso. Really?????? Why not call the "team" the North Juarez Vatos Locos? ...........Stupid.
  • Oh, boo fkin hoo. The Chihuahuas at least have a name that is related to the area. Chihuahuas are obviously a Mexican-bred dog and El Paso is a predominately Mexican town. It's not like the LA Lakers or Utah Jazz or Memphis Grizzlies who kept their names despite the fact that they moved to an area where the names just don't fit. Also, it sure as hell isn't offensive to Mexicans who aren't chronic complainers and it doesn't even come close to "Redskins" which would translate to "Spics" if we were talking about Hispanics. The people voted for the name and like any election, if u didn't vote, u shouldn't bytch about it. Of course, the racists love anything that deals with other races so they can chime in with their ignorance. Trolls abound on the world wide web, nothing more than punks who would never say what they type to someone's face.

Shutting Down the Run Game: Hundley, Grandal, Rivera and Hedges

Base stealing is an art. The greats like Rickie Henderson, Tim Raines and Vince Coleman created beauty when they ran the bases and caused havoc on opposing pitchers, catchers and managers. A successful stolen base requires three things: a good jump, all-out commitment to the steal and a crafty slide. On the other end of things, catching a runner on the base paths requires constant...

San Diego Padres minor league affiliate to be nicknamed Chihuahuas

The San Diego Padres have a new Triple-A affiliate based in El Paso and they have finally chosen a nickname to go by. Ladies and gentleman, may I present to you the El Paso Chihuahuas.
