Via Larry Brown Sports:
Umpire Jerry Layne left Friday night’s Reds-Twins game after getting hit in the head by a broken bat.
Layne was hit in the side of the head when Devin Mesoraco’s bat broke on a ground out in the fourth inning and smacked him. Layne went down immediately and was taken off the field to be examined by the Reds’ team doctor.
“There was no cuts or anything like that,” said Randy Marsh, Major League Baseball’s director of umpiring. “(Reds doctor Timothy) Kremchek checked him out. Not sure if there’s a concussion – doesn’t think he was concussed – but he has a very sore area on his face.”
X-rays and an MRI came back normal. A reserve umpire should replace Layne for the final two games of the series. Layne’s lucky to have escaped without serious injury.

There's a right way and a wrong way to grip a wooden bat. You hold it so the ball hits the bat on the side opposite the trademark. Elementary baseball #1. The players need to be taught this before someone is very seriously injured, or worse!
-
Absolutely wrong. Everyone learns to hit "label up" from day one. The weakest part of the bat is where the stamp is and hitting the ball on that part or the opposite side makes it break easier. The ball should hit 90 degrees off of the label on either side for best pop and the least liklihood of having the bat break.
-
Meh, the bat broke... Now if the player actually threw it at the ump, on account he wasn't happy with a call or something, that woulda been a different story entirely...

Its not the grip, every moron knows how to grip a wooden bat. The problem is the density of todays bats. Look for a minimum density next year.
