For anyone who’s ever gotten stuck trying to explain Twitter to their grandparents, Vin Scully offered another moment for the ages Wednesday night.
The revered 85-year-old broadcaster, who continues to endear himself to baseball fans no matter how little he knows about the modern parts of the game’s publicity, had quite a time delivering a promo during the Dodgers-Padres game. He was reading a question asking fans whether they preferred hitters’ parks or pitchers’ parks, and of course the on-screen graphic invited fans to submit their answers with hashtags on Twitter.
And of course Scully knows very little about Twitter.
Scully decided to talk a little about his complete ignorance of the medium, riffing on hashtags and then diverging into other concepts that he cannot comprehend — such as Dog TV, a station that is being set up to “comfort pets” at home when their owners leave for the day. (That led to a graceful segue wherein he mentioned Petco Park.)
Scully has admitted before that he has no use or understanding of Twitter, but this hashtag conversation took his Twitter analysis to another level. It was just the kind of situation that makes baseball fans love the man all the more.
