TOLEDO - The Columbus Clippers lost to the Toledo Mudhens in an extended game Friday night, 3-2. Along with the game, Columbus also lost all hope of finishing the season above .500. Joe Martinez started on the mound for the Clippers at Fifth Third Field. Martinez matched up against Toledo’s starter Blaine Hardy. Both pitchers kept the game quiet clear through the fifth inning until the Mudhens' offense made the first move in the sixth. Toledo led off the inning with a double out to left field. Martinez then let up a big fly out to left field, clearing the bases and putting the Mudhens up 2-0. The Clippers countered in the seventh inning when it was their turn to get on the board. With one out, two walks and a single by second baseman Justin Toole loaded the bases. Centerfielder Tim Fedroff came up with a sacrifice fly bringing third baseman Ryan Rohlinger in to score Columbus’ first run of the game. Still down by one run Rohlinger came up clutch for the Clippers leading off the ...

Orbiting Cleveland: Gauging Jose Ramirez's value

As the end of the month approaches, the attention of almost every Cleveland Indians fan is centered right on the playoff race. That's for good reason, too. Who would have thought that just one year removed from a 68-94 season, the Indians would find themselves with a 71-62 record and in the thick of the American League Wild Card race. It's quite remarkable and just goes to...

Second Thoughts Game #133: Indians 1, Braves 3

It is almost unbelievable that Ubaldo Jimenez is pitching well as the Tribe’s fifth starter and yet they are struggling to keep their competitive heads above water. However, leaving the Indians offensive struggles for later in the piece it is my responsibility to highlight or at least point to how impressive he has been of late. Over his last 42.2 innings, beginning in the last...

Indians release Brett Myers

The Brett Myers era in Cleveland is officially over. On Thursday afternoon the club announced that they activated the right-hander from the 60-day disabled list and released him from his contract. Myers, 32, made just four appearances for the Indians this season going 0-3 with an 8.02 ERA (21.1 IP, 29 H, 10 HR, 5 BB, 12 K). He struggled all spring training and during the first...

Manager Terry Francona announced the schedule of player additions this afternoon, per Paul Hoynes. From the left side, they’ll add Nick Hagadone and Clay Rapada. From the right side, Vinnie Pestano, Preston Guilmet, C.C. Lee, Carlos Carrasco...

Indians activate Brett Myers, then release him

The Cleveland Indians activated pitcher Brett Myers from the 60-day disabled list and then released him from his contract. Myers was originally signed to be the team's number three starter, but persistent right elbow problems never allowed Myers to fill that role. As reported by Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, the Indians attempted to have Myers return as a relief pitcher, a role...

Around the Farm: August 31, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game. Second Thoughts Game #134: Indians 2, Tigers 7

A rough start for Zach McAllister, a lost fly ball by Michael Bourn with the bases loaded, wild pitches and more missed scoring opportunities did the Indians in again on Friday night in Detroit even with Miguel Cabrera taken out of the game early with an injury. The rain provided some relief to the torment for Indians players and fans, but ended up forcing the game to...

August 2013 Player Power Rankings

August was a poor month for the Indians in general as can be seen by the many players who played below their expected values for the month. While the pitching staff maintained their level of excellence. As players have fallen into their niches this deep into the season, there has been very little movement, most of which was due to Corey Kluber being absent from this month's rankings...

The Clippers narrowly missed being shutout, but could not compensate for the early runs allowed. The Mudhens wasted no time jumping on starting pitcher Paolo Espino in the first inning. Manager Terry Francona held a short meeting with his team before the game. Then the Cleveland Indians fell into a familiar pattern - another loss to the Detroit Tigers. Zach McAllister was tagged early and the Tigers beat Cleveland for the 17th time in their last 21 meetings, 7-2 Friday night in a game called after seven innings because of rain. The AL Central-leading Tigers opened...

Indians Trade for Jason Kubel

In another strange move in what has been a very much against the grain season as far as roster moves are concerned, the Cleveland Indians have traded a player to be named later to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Jason Kubel. Indians fans remember Kubel as a part time outfielder and DH for the Twins from 2004 through 2011. In 2012, Kubel had a stand out season (30 home runs and 90 RBI...
