We don't really know which one will return..if either. The more likely candidate to come back would be Pettitte, as many hint that Mussina is considering retirement. Cashman seems to think that Mussina is leaning torward retirement. He will probably retire, or play three more seasons and try to reach 300 wins. Many thought he was done after last years disappointing season, but he bounced back..and nobody expected this out of him. As for Pettitte?he didn't have such a great season. His second half was disappointing, and that is where he usually shines. He wasn't the stopper he used to be. It is also true that he was pitching while he was injured down the stretch. Who really knows what was going on.
Mussina's last two seasons in pinstripes:
'07- 152.0IP (W-L) 11-10 188H 90R 87ER 35BB 91K 5.15ERA 1.47WHIP .311BAA
'08- 200.1IP (W-L) 20-9 214H 85R 75ER 31BB 150K 3.37ERA 1.22WHIP .217BAA
Pettitte's last two seasons in pinstripes:
'07- 215.1IP (W-L) 15-9 238H 106R 97ER 69BB 141K 4.05ERA 1.43WHIP .286BAA
'08- 204.0IP (W-L) 14-14 233H 112R 103ER 55BB 158K 4.54ERA 1.41WHIP .290BAA
So Yankee fans?who do you want? I can tell you this..don't expect more years like this from Mussina. This is a high point for him. I don't think it gets better than that. I'm not saying he won't be good, but I doubt he will be as good as he was in 2008. I think more people say Mussina should return just because he is coming off a great season. I think it's a tough decision, but the biggest part is whether or not either of them want to come back or not.
