Big news hit in Devil Ray Town just as Memorial Day weekend was starting. Future Hall Of Famers Scott Kazmir and Troy Percival were both placed on the disabled list, and pitcher Dale Thayer was called up.
Thayer made an impressive big league debut after starting the season saving 6 games for AAA Durham. He entered Friday’s game in the bottom of the 7th to protect a 15-1 Devil Rays lead. He artfully got the last 9 outs and earned his first big league save.
Why the save for protecting a 14-run lead? Cork tells me it’s for three innings of “effective” relief plus one amazing mustache. The Rays Party has fancy charts of Thayer’s debut, but I’m putting much more stock...
