TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros
It was only the worst team in baseball but at this point we’ll take whatever we can get and when the MVP version of Andrew McCutchen showed up last night, it got our glasses looking half full…if the Pirates can build on it (how many times have we dropped that line over the last month though?).
Since the start of August, we’ve seen Cutch’s numbers from .373/.432/.632 to .358/.419/.606 half way through the month to .341/.405/.559 heading into last night’s game against the Astros. Going a perfect 4 for 4 with 3 RBI and a run scored helped boost those numbers a bit and helped the Buccos beat the Astros 6-2 after getting embarrassed by Houston on Labor Day.
Cutch finally got some balls to go his way last night. He ripped an RBI double down the third base line in his first at bat to get the Pirates on the board, then he got a groundball to see its way up the middle to drive in the Bucs’ second run, and drove in the Bucs’ fourth run with another single in his third trip to the plate. He w...

Marte, Qualls, Walker Close to Getting Back With Pirates
Manager Clint Hurdle can sigh in relief with several players getting close to coming back to playing with the Pirates. Marte (oblique) started his rehab assignment with State College tonight, and will have it transferred to Triple-A on Wednesday. Neil Walker (low back) continues to ramp his workouts, and Chad Qualls (big...
Pirates Notebook: Holt, McCutchen Pick Up Four-Hit Nights
Since Brock Holt joined the big league club, the infielder has created a spark at the top of the lineup. Holt picked up two hits in his first big league start, and came back even better on Wednesday at PNC Park. With Holt being able to get on base, it put more pressure on the Houston Astros’ starter Jordan Lyles as Andrew McCutchen put together a big night as well.
“They showed...
Holt’s Whirlwind Season Gives Him Opportunity to Finish in the Bigs
Brock Holt stands at just 5′ 10″ and 170 pounds, but don’t let his size fool you of the drive that he has.
“Isn’t that the beauty of this sport?,” Manager Clint Hurdle said. “That he’s overachieving, but maybe he’s not because everybody else’s expectations of what’s successful should be, or what a successful second baseman should look like? I just love the fact...
What do the Pirates have in Brock Holt?
With his four hits last night, Brock Holt quickly ascended to the top of every single Pirate fan's "Please tell me this guy can be better than Clint Barmes when Neil Walker comes back" list. Because of the Pirates' utter lack of shortstop depth in the minors before Alen Hanson's emergence this year (and maybe again after Hanson makes what seems like an inevitable...
Pittsburgh Pirates Great, Bill Mazeroski
On October 13,1960, Bill Mazeroski hit his famous World Series winning, walk-off homer. Not only was it the greatest single moment in Pittsburgh Pirates history, it ranks up there as the single greatest moment in baseball history. His Pirates career was far from just one moment, Maz played 2,163 regular season games for the Pirates and 12 postseason games. He is considered by many...
Kevin Correia, Alex Presley, and Clint Barmes Lead Bucs to Series Win
Final: Pirates 6, Astros 3
WP: Kevin Correia (10-8, 4.28 ERA)
LP: Fernando Abad
That’s a headline you probably will never see again.
But seriously, Kevin Correia pitched great tonight, going six innings and giving up just a run on four hits.
Clint Barmes, who for some reason was hitting second in the lineup, reached base three times with a single and two walks, and successfully...
First Pitch: Wrapping Up the Minor League Season
Today wrapped up the bulk of the minor league seasons for the individual teams in the Pirates’ farm system. Bradenton, Altoona, West Virginia, and the GCL Pirates are now finished.
Indianapolis finished their regular season today, and will go on to the International League playoffs, which start on Wednesday. There won’t be many “prospects” playing in those games. The Pirates...
Flash in the pan or something more - Brock Holt
Just a disclaimer before I start this post. I'm working on kind of switching up the way I do things here on the blog. Before, a large majority of my posts were dedicated to game recaps and the like. I'm attempting to get away from that. I may still do it occasionally but only when I have writer's block. The big reason I did that for so long is in hopes...
Indians Fall To Knights In First Playoff Game
Charlotte Knights 8, Indianapolis Indians 1
(Box)
Rick VandenHurk took the loss tonight.
A busy first inning was all the Charlotte Knights needed to defeat the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field tonight in the first game of the first round of the International League playoffs. Knights’ starter Charlie Leesman dominated the Indians’ batters, allowing just one run...
DSL Pirates1 Win the Dominican Summer League Championship
The DSL Pirates1 beat the DSL Angels 4-3 today to win the deciding game in the Dominican Summer League Championship series. The last time the Pirates won a Dominican championship was in 2003.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, after Ulises Montilla scored on a ground out by Danny Arribas. Montilla reached on a walk, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and throwing...
Minor League Schedule: 9/6/12
Indianapolis lost game one of their best-of-five playoff series against Charlotte last night. For game two, they will give the ball to top prospect Gerrit Cole, looking to even up the series. State College finished their schedule last night, the last team to finish their regular season. The DSL Pirates lost yesterday in game four of their best-of-five series. The deciding game will...
This Date in Pirates History: September 4
On a slow day for Pittsburgh Pirates history, we have two players born on this date and one very minor trade, though it involved a player with an interesting career. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland recaps a strong major league debut for a Pirates pitcher from the 1982 season.
The Trade
On this date in 1954, the Pirates traded first baseman Jack Phillips to the Chicago...
Wandy tosses gem, Pirates beat Astros
Wandy Rodriguez has now pitched 13 consecutive scoreless innings over his past 2 starts. Trying to find some footing
The Pirates try to stop this latest losing streak at four games this evening with their second of three against the Astros. All isn't technically lost for 2012 yet, but it probably will be if the Pirates can't win these last two games against Houston at PNC Park. Wandy Rodriguez goes against his old club for the second time as a Pirate. Jordan Lyles, who's spent most...
