After Stephen Strasburg dominated for seven innings, Ian Desmond singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth Thursday to give the Washington Nationals a season-opening 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Strasburg, starting his first opener, allowed one run and five hits, struck out five and walked one. He reached 98 mph when he struck out Starlin Castro in the sixth.
Tyler Clippard (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth to win in relief, and Brad Lidge got the save.
Ryan Dempster, also making his first opening start, struck out 10 in 7 2-3 innings for the Cubs as they played their first game since Theo Epstein was hired away from Boston.

The Washington Nationals have demoted starting pitcher John Lannan, and not just to their bullpen.
Lannan, who started Opening Day for the Nationals in 2009 and 2010, has been sent down to the minor leagues. With this move to option Lannan down, the Nationals have announced that Ross Detwiler will take his spot in the starting rotation, at least to begin the 2012 MLB...
Former Washington Nationals Opening Day starter John Lannan had made headlines in the DC sports world lately, and today is no exception. John Lannan has requested a trade from GM Mike Rizzo, according to several baseball sources. This comes just hours after Lannan was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse to start the season in favor of former first-round pick Ross Detwiler.
The Washington Nationals are headed to Chicago on Thursday to start what could be a promising 2012 season. However, some key injuries may leave the team a bit more crippled than fans would hope, causing an already concerning offense to be a little bit worse. The overall positive on this year’s Nats team is the pitching staff, so we’ll start there with Part 1.
Here's video of Bryce Harper doing an interview with CNY Central News in Syracuse during Chiefs media day on Wednesday. (Asked what he knew about Syracuse prior to arriving, Harper acknowledged that he "always knew it was a big basketball town. Everyone knows about Syracuze".)
The Washington Post's Dave Sheinin was at Harper's AAA debut in Syracuze on Thursday...
Stephen Strasburg dominated in his first opening-day start, yet wasn't able to come away with a win.
After Strasburg frustrated the Cubs for seven innings, Ian Desmond singled in the go-ahead run in the ninth Thursday to give the Washington Nationals a season-opening 2-1 win over Chicago.
Strasburg allowed one run and five hits, including an RBI single to Marlon Byrd in the...
A couple of years ago, Sports Illustrated ran a preseason story hyping the Seattle Mariners on the strength of the defensive metric, Ultimate Zone Rating. I remember reading the article and wondering if I was behind the times, especially since I’d never heard of UZR (and truth be told, I still don’t really understand fielding stats.) The piece seemed a little odd since the Mariners...
Bryce Harper went 2-for-4 and stole a base in his Triple A debut for the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday.
In his first at-bat, Harper, the top pick by the Washington Nationals in the 2010 draft, lined a double down the right-field line on a 2-2 pitch, easily beating the throw with a head-first slide into second. He advanced to third on a long fly out to right center but was stranded...
Nationals starter John Lannan, who didn't make the team's Opening Day roster and was demoted to AAA Syracuse to start the year, has demanded a trade after not making the roster. One team that apparently has interest is the Chicago Cubs, but my major question about the Cubs interest in Lannan is "why?"
The Cubs have a solid, albeit unspectacular, rotation consisting...
Losing Stephen Strasburg again would be not good.
The Cubs kick off their season this afternoon by hosting Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field. The White Sox won't begin their 2012 season until tomorrow, when they face off against the Rangers in Texas. That won't keep Chicago superfans Nick Offerman (Parks and Rec's Ron Swanson) and Craig Robinson (The Office's Darryl Philbin) from talking...
Welcome back to another year of Obstructed View series previews! And I guess Cubs baseball too. The Washington Nationals have come a long way since their "Natinals" days. The team has made great strides and could be a playoff contender if it weren't stuck in the NL East. Even then I wouldn't be too surprised [...]
The games threads this year, for as long as we do them anyway, are going to be abbreviated compared to the past. Stephen Strasburg gets the ball for the Nationals and Ryan Dempster gets his 2nd consecutive opening day start. Let's hope it goes better than the last one. Opening Day hasn't gone well for [...]
Stephen Strasburg on the mound at Wrigley Field, pink flamingos in center field at Miami. Vin Scully at the microphone, Prince Fielder in Motown.
Young and old, fresh and familiar, baseball is set to start all across America. A week after Ichiro Suzuki, Yoenis Cespedes and the rest of Athletics and Mariners began in Tokyo, everyone else gets a turn at opening day.
Stephen Strasburg could hardly wait for this one.
