Danny Espinosa hit a two-run homer early, and his RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the Washington Nationals to a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Michael Morse was 0 for 4 when he doubled to start the 12th inning and extend his career-high hitting streak to 16 games. He was replaced by pinch-runner Cesar Izturis, who was making his first appearance for Washington after being claimed off waivers from Milwaukee on Monday. Roger Bernadina advanced Izturis to third with a sacrifice bunt. Espinosa's sharp grounder off Mickey Storey (0-1) skipped past the pitcher for a hit that brought Izturis home and gave the Nationals their second straight extra-inning win over Houston. The loss dropped the Astros to 0-11 in extra-inning games this season. Washington beat them 5-4 in 11 innings on Monday. Houston's Steve Pearce singled off Tyler Clippard in the 12th before Carlos Corporan drew a two-out walk. Bernadina, the center fielder, crashed into the wall while ma...

Gio Gonzalez hits first HR, throws complete game win, earns shaving cream pie

And so, Edwin Jackson delivered a shaving cream pie to the face of Gio Gonzalez during Gio's postgame interview with MASN's Kristina Akra. Gio not only threw a complete game for the win (a huge lift to a completely gassed bullpen), but also got a bubblegum shower upon his return to the dugout after his first career home run. Pretty nice little Tuesday for Nat Gio. More images...

Of course these kids traded Gio Gonzalez's first career HR ball for two Bryce Harper autographed baseballs

Thanks to the magic of Kristina Akra on MASN last night, we learned that some kids ended up with Gio Gonzalez's first career home run ball, then traded it for a couple of baseballs autographed by Bryce Harper. Of course they did. And here's the guy who almost threw Gio's HR ball back onto the field; thankfully he gave it to the kids. (Screen caps via MASN/MLB.com...

Video: Watch the Astros become the Bad News Bears

Relive the magic of the 11th inning of Monday's Nats-Astros game, when Kurt Suzuki bunted, two Astros collided, another Astro dove over the pile, someone threw the ball away into right field, Roger Bernadina ran through Bo Porter's stop sign, another Astro airmailed the throw to the plate, Bernadina scored (the game winning run), and Suzuki ended up on third base. On a...

Washington Nationals pitcher Tyler Clippard falls off mound during pitch

As it has been previously noted here on Laugh At Sports, we love it when Major League Baseball players take a tumble during games.During Monday night's Houston Astros/Washington Nationals affair, Nationals closer Tyler Clippard was trying to shut the door on a Houston comeback. As he prepared to fire a pitch to Houston's Matt Downs, Tyler had a little bit of problems with...

Longtime minor-leaguer's' perseverance finally pays off with call-up to Astros

Brandon Barnes had 2,976 plate appearances in the Houston Astros organization before Tuesday. After some of them, he thought about giving up. After some of them, he was free to sign anywhere else. When he did neither of those, he just went out and had a tremendous 2012 season at Double-A and Triple-A and Tuesday night spent his first game in a big-league uniform. "There...

Breaking Bad: Houston Astros

Baby, you can drive my…..train? This year marks the 51st year of play for the Houston Astros as a franchise.  In those 51 years, the Astros have lost more than 74 games in a season 35 times.  The team’s current record stands at 36-76 after the first 112 games of the season.  As losses accumulate, the Astros move incrementally closer to the franchise’s worst year ever which...

Nats Talk On The Go: Episode 30

The Washington Nationals just finished a game with one of the most bizarre endings you'll ever see against the Houston Astros, and there's a lot to talk about. We hit the Kurt Suzuki trade and its affect on the team and the pitching staff, the Cesar Izturis signing, Tyler Clippard's recent struggles, and Ross Detwiler's continued improvement. Craig also happily admits...

Angel Hernandez loves Bryce Harper, you just wouldn't know it from his strike zone

So what happened in the sixth inning last night, with Bryce Harper at the plate with the bases loaded, two outs, and a 3-0 count? Just umpire Angel Hernandez being Angel Hernandez, inserting himself into the game yet again by calling three straight balls, strikes, against Harper. Angel's strike zone was all over the place all night long (at one point it was even spotted getting...

Astros lose in embarrassingly bad fashion, after turning a sac bunt into an error-filled RBI triple

Well technically it was a sacrifice bunt turned two base error, with the Nats Roger Bernadina scoring all the way from first on Kurt Suzuki’s sacrifice,  as the Astros ran into each other, dove all over the field, then threw the ball away twice—turning a simple fairly simple play into a Three Stooges routine—basically handing Washington the extra inning victory. The only thing...

Nationals acquire INF Izturis from Brewers

The Washington Nationals acquired infielder Cesar Izturis from the Milwaukee Brewers in a waiver wire trade Monday. Izturis, who has seen time at all four infield positions this season, was claimed by the Nationals who needed depth around the infield with shortstop Ian Desmond on the disabled list and Mark DeRosa (groin) day-to-day. Izturis is in the final year of his contract...

Washington Nationals V. Houston Astros: a Series Look-In

Coming off of a weekend home series in which they took three of four from their NL East rivals the Miami Marlins, the Washington Nationals hit the road for a 10-game trip beginning Monday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Nationals kick off a four game series in Houston against the MLB worst Astros who have lost 30 of their last 34 games. The fact that they get the Astros...

GM Scores: Jeff Luhnow

Here is the first full GM score table; this will be the new format (at least until I get another way to improve them). I’m going to do this for all active GMs with all of their moves and the WAR they produced. This will be updated after each season. Eventually I’ll be adding scores for each GM to be able to compare them to other GMs. First up is Jeff Luhnow of the Astros. Luhnow...

The O’s win in 14, beating Seattle on two HR from Matt Wieters. They’ve now won 12 straight extra-inning games and are tied for the AL Wild Card. This is shaping up to be an okay baseball season.
