The Washington Nationals acquired infielder Cesar Izturis from the Milwaukee Brewers in a waiver wire trade Monday. Izturis, who has seen time at all four infield positions this season, was claimed by the Nationals who needed depth around the infield with shortstop Ian Desmond on the disabled list and Mark DeRosa (groin) day-to-day. Izturis is in the final year of his contract and was batting .235 with Milwaukee.

Nationals acquire infielder Cesar Izturis

A source close to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post confirms him that the Washington Nationals have acquired veteran infielder Cesar Izturis from the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room on the roster, the Nationals placed Mark DeRosa on the Disabled List and designated Atahualpa Severino for assignment. To replace Izturis, the Miwaukee Brewers have called up recently acquired Jean...

Segura will get two-month audition with Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers decided not to wait until September to take a look at shortstop prospect Jean Segura. They called him up Monday with the intention of playing him regularly the rest of the season. "I think it's a great opportunity to look at him," said manager Ron Roenicke. "It's important to see for going forward next year and maybe the year after to...

Brewers call up top prospect Jean Segura

The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled shortstop Jean Segura from Double-A Huntsville on Monday night and inserted him into the starting lineup against the Cincinnati Reds. Segura was the top player acquired from the Los Angeles Angels in the deal for right-hander Zack Greinke in July. He was set to bet eighth. Segura takes the 25-man roster spot held by shortstop Cesar Izturis, who...

Nats CF makes sweet game-saving grab

Your browser does not support iframes. Let me set the stage for this amazing play in Tuesday's Nationals-Astros game. Bottom of the 12th inning. Nationals clinging to a 3-2 lead. Runners on first and second with two outs for Brett Wallace, who drives a ball deep to left center field at Minute Maid Park. Washington center fielder Roger Bernadina makes a tremendous leaping catch...

Brewers' Fiers silences red-hot Cincinnati

MILWAUKEE This was supposed to be the beginning of the end. The moment where the Milwaukee Brewers revealed what was truly behind the curtain. The game where Mike Fiers revealed what he had been all along: a late-round draft pick that happened to catch the rest of baseball by surprise. As a pitcher so reliant on deception and not on pure stuff, those who doubted Fiers' performance...

Flying Shark!

(Above: Craig Stammen was excited about Roger Bernadina's catch, too.) The opposite of Monday's ridiculous sh*tstorm by the Astros in the 11th inning, Roger Bernadina registered maybe the catch of the year on Tuesday night to save a win for the Nats in the 12th inning. MLB.com video here. Screencaps of the flying shark catch (via MASN/TV) follow: ...

Marcum To Return Soon?

The Brewers’ rotation hasn’t exactly impressed since Zack Greinke’s departure, but at least some help is on the way. Right-hander Shaun Marcum, who has been out since mid-June with tightness in his elbow, threw a successful simulated game today and will hopefully be ready for a rehab outing sometime later this week. The circumstances surrounding Marcum’s injury were ...

Strasburg gets back to basics with Nats

If there were any concerns that Stephen Strasburg was slowing down or had been figured out after a recent home loss to Philadelphia, those worries can be put to rest for this week. Strasburg bounced back from his shortest outing of the season against the Phillies (four innings) to post six innings of shutout ball against the Miami Marlins. The Nationals ended up taking three...

Fiers perfect through 6, Brewers beat Reds 3-1

Brewers rookie Mike Fiers took a perfect game into the seventh inning and Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer off Johnny Cueto to lead Milwaukee over the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 on Tuesday night. Fiers (6-4) retired his first 18 batters before Zack Cozart doubled to left-center leading off the seventh. He advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on Brandon Phillips' sacrifice fly...

Reds cool down, lose second straight

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Yovani Gallardo pitched seven innings, and Martin Maldonado homered and drove in three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 Monday night. Gallardo (10-8) gave up six hits, three walks and one run to equal his longest outing of the season and reach a double-digit win total for the fourth straight year. Bronson Arroyo (7-7) gave up 10...

Nationals 3, Astros 2(12)

Danny Espinosa hit a two-run homer early, and his RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the Washington Nationals to a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Michael Morse was 0 for 4 when he doubled to start the 12th inning and extend his career-high hitting streak to 16 games. He was replaced by pinch-runner Cesar Izturis, who was making his first appearance for Washington...

Here's the guy who has been screaming through tonight's Nats-Astros game

You know the famous quote: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture"? Well, if you're tuning into the Nationals-Astros game tonight, the photo above, via @patrickboylan, and photo below, via LizTexas should be considered as our best attempt at dancing about architecture. We have no audio of the guy who has been screaming like a drunken Texas banshee...

Brewers mash three homers, topple Reds

The last time the Redlegs (66-43) dropped back-to-back ball games was in early July. On Monday though, it happened again. The visting Reds were doubled-up by the host Brewers (49-59), 6-3, at Miller Park. The two teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo helped himself with an RBI single to put his club on top, 1-0. Milwaukee...

Nationals-Astros Preview

With the best road record in the majors, the Washington Nationals would seem to have a very good chance of ending their recent struggles in Houston. The NL East-leading Nationals begin that quest Monday when they open a 10-game road trip against the lowly Astros. Coming off back-to-back home wins over Miami, Washington (65-43) has won 12 of 17 overall. It's won six of seven...
