The Washington Nationals are bringing their impressive ERA and penchant for winning close games to the West Coast. They'll send Gio Gonzalez to the mound in the opener of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Washington (12-4) will play its first six games against NL West opponents on this trip, moving on to face the Dodgers on Friday. The Nationals should be well rested following two days off after Sunday's finale of an 11-game homestand was rained out against Miami. With an ERA of 2.34 and a 6-2 mark in one-run games, the Nationals believe they can contend for the East crown. "It really validates we are a pretty good team,'' said first baseman Adam LaRoche, who has a club-high 13 RBIs. "Not just all the talk, not just guys in spring training thinking we're a pretty good team. Now it's starting to be like reality. This team is legit. It rubs off on everybody.'' The homestand featured five one-run victories, wi...

Umpire takes 96 MPH Stephen Strasburg fastball to the nuts

Via Deadspin: Among the video highlights of Saturday's walk-off win by the Nationals: umpire Greg Gibson took a 96 mile per hour Stephen Strasburg fastball to the crotch. In the 9th inning, Brad Lidge would give Strasburg a taste of his own medicine, blowing Strasburg's 2-0 lead. Befriend the Nats Enquirer on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter.

Ryan Zimmerman's shoulder looked fine signing autographs in his Bentley on Saturday

Here's video (via AllStarsPlus) of Ryan Zimmerman signing autographs for fans after the Nationals walk-off win on Saturday. His shoulder looked good there. Apparently that was Rick Ankiel laying on his horn at the end of the clip. Three Big Ones From Ivan Rodriguez

Ivan Rodriguez is reportedly slated to announce his retirement from baseball today. There will be much written about his impressive career, and much of it will focus on whether or not he will get into the Hall of Fame, even though his numbers pretty obviously warrant it. Personally, I think that leaves aside the whole issue of who such a great player had not one but two lame nicknames...

Daily Friar 4.25.12

The Padres couldn't extend their 2 game winning streak to 3 last night. After a pitchers duel between Clayton Richard and Gio Gonzalez ended in Richard throwing one too many pitches. The homplate umpire was of no help last night either. Calling a balk on Richard that the first base umpire didn't even call. Then calling a ball way off the plate a strike to get Cameron Maybin...
