After seeing their lineup go cold following a three-run first inning and their bullpen blow a lead they held for over seven innings the Nationals came through in the bottom of the ninth with a thrilling walkoff victory over the Atlanta Braves. Denard Span is the hero with a one-out RBI hit in the ninth off Craig Kimbrel aided by a Andrelton Simmons error to give the Nats the winning run. Dan Haren gave the Nationals a strong start with six innings of one-run ball the only run he allowed came off a sacrifice fly by Freddie Freeman in the sixth. The Nationals were up for much of the game lost the lead and then regained it off the best closer in the game. In taking back the win the Nats prevented the Braves from being able to clinch the NL East division in the second game of the doubleheader. They now enter tonight 4 1/2 games out of the NL Wild Card race with a chance to get their first series win against Atlanta this season. Meanwhile Cincinnnati will battle the Astros at 8:10 p.m. i...

Braves magic number holds at 4, Nats up next

Atlanta went into the 3-game set against the struggling San Diego Padres with high hopes of dropping their magic number to within division-clinching distance before the series in D.C. began Monday. However, best laid plans never seem to pan out in these situations. The Braves suffered 2 losses at the hands of the Padres and came away from the series with their magic number of 4 not...

Chopcast: Is there trouble in NL East paradise?

ATLANTA The Braves' doubleheader loss to the Nationals does not define or erase a season highlighted by the National League's best record to date (89-62) and some of the best organization moves in baseball. But it does raise some issues and concerns for a team limping toward the finish the line. Atlanta is just 4-6 in its last 10 games, 6-10 in the month of September. This...

Dan Uggla makes backwards throw and still gets out (GIF)

One 2013's funnier plays happened during the Braves-Nationals game Tuesday night when Dan Uggla actually threw the ball backwards on fielder's choice to first, but the team still got the out at home. Confused? Here's the breakdown: Uggla whiffs on the throw, then picks up the ball. His relay throw to Freddie Freeman led to Denard Span being thrown out at home on...

Atlanta Braves September Doldrums Giving Fans 2011 Flashbacks

The month of September...perhaps the unkindest of months to the Atlanta Braves and their fans in recent years. In 2011 the Braves were part of a monumental dual-league September collapse with the Boston Red Sox, as both teams squandered sizable leads for making the postseason and ended up sitting home in the fall. Could it happen again? Nah, the Red Sox are doing fine.  But seriously,

Denard Span just keeps on hitting

Ah the good times, back when the Twins had Ben Revere and Denard Span. It’s nice to see him back in a Twins uniform, even if it is just nostalgic, isn’t it? Span has been making news lately for his torrid stretch. Denard has a 23 game hitting streak for the Nationals going right now. This kind of production is exactly what the Nationals were after when they sent a top pitching...

That’s Baseball: Craig Kimbrel vs. Chase Headley

After particularly vexing losses, as fans wait for long-winded diatribes and dissertations, Bud Black will often simply remark, “That’s baseball.” While the triteness of Black’s comment often frustrates fans, it’s actually the perfect thing to be said because, well, baseball’s really weird. When Chase Headley stepped to the plate on Saturday night to lead off the top...
