Nats ask for chance to talk to Mattingly - The Wash. TimesThe Nationals have asked if they can talk to Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly about their vacant manager position. Mattingly appears interested and spoke highly of the Nats pitching prospects, especially Jordan Zimmermann, currently recovering from Tommy John surgery.Bob Melvin, who has ties to Washington GM Mike Rizzo from when they were in Arizona, is also thought to be a candidate. Another former Diamondbacks skipper, Buck Showalter, is interested but has not been contacted. One report yesterday (Sports Illustrated) suggested that Riggleman must be the guy because the Nats search has been very quiet. The same report said Mattingly was in line to succeed Joe Torre in L.A. Mattingly, a Yankees great, was also thought to be in line to succeed Torre in the Bronx, but that job went to Joe Girardi.
