You already likely heard of another drug related issue in the Washington Nationals minor league system.  First, last week, prospect Adrian Neito was suspended for 50 games for violating Major League Baseball substance abuse policy.  Now, word comes down that prospect catcher Hector Tavares was found in possession of an unauthorized syringe.  You can remember last season the 50 game suspension of IF Seth Bynum.

Just what is the deal here?  How rampant are illegal substances within the Washington Nationals system?  These are questions that Mike Rizzo need to answer.  This is getting absurd.

Nationals signed IF Alex Cintron to a minor league deal.

The Sporting News lists the Nationals 2010 number one draft pick Bryce Harper as the top prospect in all of baseball.

Harper’s pro debut came in the Arizona Fall League to the tune of a .343/.410/.629 triple slash line in 39 plate appearances. Considering the AFL tends to have a lot of older prospects, that’s an encouraging line. Harper looks like he has all the tools to be a stud. But those tools won’t be on display in the majors for at least another year. Remember, Harper is a high-school aged player with a year of junior college, opposed to Stephen Strasburg, who was a full-blown college product. Standard and regular keeper leagues can just marvel at the minor league numbers for now. Harper will be a hot commodity in dynasty leagues, if he hasn’t already been drafted. ETA: 2013

Phenom Stephen Strasburg is a busy guy.  Not only is he working the heck out of his back and shoulders, continuing his rehab on his elbow, and kicking his smokeless tobacco habit, but he is also making bets on six packs.  Damn dude is busy.

Nationals pitching coach Steve McCatty told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post last month about how Strasburg is getting in such good shape that he has six-pack abdominal muscles.

McCatty said at first he didn’t believe it, so he decided to set up a friendly wager with Strasburg.

“We have a bet,” McCatty said. “Strassy and I have a bet. He told me he is coming into camp in the best shape of his life. I said, ‘OK, does that mean you have a six-pack?’ He started to laugh and then he said, ‘Yeah!’ I said, ‘OK, I got $100 that says you don’t.’ And he said, ‘OK.’

“I said, ‘If you come into camp with a six-pack, I owe you $100. But if you come into camp without a six-pack, you owe me $100,000 because that is like $100 to you’. I told him, ‘Strassy, I am in a great position. If you come in with a six-pack, I am not paying you anyway.’ So it is kind of a running joke.”
