You can correct me if I’m wrong on this, but didn’t the New York Mets say that they were not adding any more pieces to the 25-man roster?  If so, what is up with the report that they are interested in Jeff Francis?  I suppose the team could sign him to a minor league deal, but why would Jeff Francis – coming off of a useful season with the Kansas City Royals – want to sign a minor league deal?  Sure, some of his numbers are pretty ugly – specifically his 4.82 ERA and sub-5.00 K/9.  Dig a little deeper though and you can see that he did do some good things.  His FIP was a much tidier 4.10 as he limited his walks (1.92 BB/9) and kept the ball on the ground fairly well (47.1%).  He also logged 183 innings.  I would be lying blatantly if I said that I would be excited to watch Jeff Francis in the New York Mets’ starting rotation in 2012, but I can’t say that it would be a bad deal considering the state of the team and the pitching staff at this ...

The Post-Injury Jeff Francis and DIPS

It’s probably the Canadian in me talking, but I have always been a Jeff Francis fan. The University of British Columbia product was selected 9th overall by the Colorado Rockies in the famed Moneyball draft, and rewarded the team with 11.8 WAR in his first five big league seasons before succumbing to the injury bug. Now, the 31 year old finds himself without a job a month before...

The Pirates might be done for the winter

If not Francis it will be someone...

On Friday it was reported that the Mets along with three other teams were interested in Jeff Francis. I like Francis because he's a lefty and I believe he's better then his numbers indicated last year. Unconnected to the rumored market heating up, Fangraph did a piece on Francis basically saying despite solid peripherals he's going to need solid defense with an 85mph...

Jeff Francis: A Good Value for the Mets

Reports indicate the Mets have some interest in free agent starter Jeff Francis. When you take a quick glance at Francis’ 6-16, 4.82 ERA with Kansas City last season, and you wonder how he could help the Mets. First, and most obvious, the Mets lack big league caliber pitching depth. They were fortunate to get through a majority of last season with only 6 starters, but like...

Mets among four teams interested in Jeff Francis

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN says the Mets are among four teams “keeping tabs” on LHP Jeff Francis. Francis, 31, went 6-16 with a 4.82 ERA 183 innings over 31 starts for the Royals last season. Although he allowed 224 hits, he allowed just 39 walks while striking out 91. Matthew Cerrone: The market for Francis has dwindled. During the Winter Meetings, it seemed like more teams...

The low-pay, sort-of desperate minor-league deal

Last Friday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN said the Mets, Reds, Blue Jays and Mariners have been “keeping tabs” on free-agent LHP Jeff Francis. Matthew Cerrone: I’ve also heard the Twins, Cubs and at least two or three others teams are interested in Francis as well. In addition to Francis, teams are also looking at Kyle Davies, Zack Duke, Jon Garland, Rich Harden, Livan...

Quick Hits: Red Sox, Gordon, Francis, Montero, Braves

Friday night links.. It appears that talks between the Rockies and Red Sox regarding Marco Scutaro are dormant, but Rob Bradford of WEEI.com writes that Boston's possible motivation for a move involving Scutaro would be to free up payroll.  The club has reportedly expressed interest in White Sox starter Gavin Floyd and free agent outfielder Cody Ross, but neither move...
