Remember that trade? On January 23rd, 2012 the New York Yankees sent Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi to the Seattle Mariners for Jose Campos and Michael Pineda.
Pineda was coming off an All Star season and was 5th in rookie of the year voting in 2011. He had a respectable line of 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 171 IP and 173 k’s. Seattle was a bad team that year, finishing in 4th place with a 67-95 record.
2011 was promising for Montero as well. In 109 AAA games he hit 18 homers with 67 RBI to go along with a .288 average. He was called up late in the season and performed well. His line of 4 homers, 12 rbi and a .328 average in 18 games was a nice surprise for the Yankees who were losing Jorge Posada to retirement.
However the trade shook everything up and was heralded as a win-win for both teams. The details since have not been pretty.
