Jayson Nix, 29, will head to Tampa this Spring and compete for the New York Yankees’ utility infielder job.  Over the past few seasons he has spent most of his time at third base, but he has received some burn at second base, shortstop and the outfield as well.  The dude has a .207 batting average (aren’t too many metrics to put a pretty face on that), but he does have some pop evidenced by his 12 and 14 homers in 2009 and 2010 respectively.  The New York Yankees probably don’t have much more in mind for Jayson Nix other than depth and a way to keep some heat on Eduardo Nunez this offseason.  What if they do though?  For those of us who like to speculate (and I know its more than a few), does this Jayson Nix signing provide any shred of a signal that the New York Yankees might be entertaining offers for Eduardo Nunez?  I’m not ready to jump on that bandwagon because of Jayson Nix’s presence, but it’s not out of the question.  As much as some of us...

Yankees Sign Utilityman Jayson Nix to Minor League Deal

The Yankees signed utilityman Jayson Nix to a minor league contract, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post. Nix, 29, had a .245 OBP with a .554 OPS in 46 games with the Blue Jays last season. He has a career OPS+ of just 72. While he can’t hit, he does have experience playing at second, short, and third base as well as left and right fields. Nix doesn’t have a large...

New York Yankees Sign Freddy Garcia to 1 Year Contract

The New York Yankees signed Freddy Garcia to a 1 year contract, following a solid performance by the left handed pitcher in 2011. The team has not yet released terms of the agreement, but it is expected to be a 1 year deal worth roughly $4.5 – $5 million. Garcia signed a minor league contract with New York in Spring Training last year, and pitched well enough to earn a spot...

Classic Yankees: Behind the Scenes

I am sorry for the lack of Classic Yankees posts lately, but I’ve been busy with some personal matters. But this DOES give me time to recognize some classic Yankees that were not players, but still made their mark in Yankees history; for example, Gene Monahan. The long-time Yankees trainer ended his tenure after this past season. Do you remember, in the last days of the old Stadium...

Freddy Garcia signs 1 year deal with Yankees

According to a series of Tweets by Maridiano, the New York Yankees have signed Freddy Garcia to a one-year deal.  The

Garcia May Stay

The Yankees offered Freddy Garcia arbitration. I suspect this means the New York front office felt Freddy’s 2011 seasons was more reproducible than Bartolo Colon‘s.

Unpleasant Thought

"I have one year left. I might call it over." — Mariano Rivera, quoted by George King in the Post. I prefer to remain in denial regarding the inevitability that there is a day coming relatively soon when Mo will no longer pitch for the Yankees ever again.

Yankees To Sign Freddy Garcia

The Yankees agreed to terms with Freddy Garcia on a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The sides were nearing a deal last night, after the Yankees offered the right-hander arbitration. Garcia, 35, signed a minor league deal in February and delivered a surprisingly strong 3.62 ERA in 146 2/3 innings. The 13-year veteran posted 5.9 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 36.4...

Garcia, Yankees sign 1-year deal

The Yankees addressed the back end of their rotation yesterday by re-signing veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia to a one-year deal for a total north of $4 million. The contract is pending a physical. Bringing back the 35-year-old, however, doesn’t improve the front end of the rotation headed by ace...
