The Pirates signed their 2nd round draft pick Wyatt Mathisen on Monday:

Im officially a Pittsburgh Pirate! twitter.com/wmathisen_4/st…

Mathisen, a high-school catcher from Texas, signed his pick’s exact designated slot value ($746,300), so the Pirates didn’t save or lose any allotted money in their pool for the first ten rounds. He will head to Bradenton to play in the Gulf Coast League.

There still hasn’t been any word on Mark Appel, but his season came to a close this weekend as Stanford fell to Florida State in the super regionals. Even though he’s done, don’t get your hopes up for any news until we reach July.

There will be one Pirates draft pick in the College World Series, though. Kent State senior Jimmy Rider, a senior infielder from Peters Township and the Pirates’ 26th round pick, hit a bloop walkoff double to send the underdog Golden Flashes to Omaha over the heavily favored Oregon Ducks. Good for him.

Moving from the college ranks to the minor leagues, Indianapolis made some waves with a huge 16-0 win last night. Justin Wilson (5-4, 3.80) posted a strong outing while Starling Marte and Yamaico Navarro were among those who had big days at the plate. Marte doubled and tripled, continuing his recent mini-hot streak (his average is now at .260). Navarro had three hits, including two doubles. He’s been crushing the ball ever since being sent down.

And lastly, some chatter about the big league club:

  • Here’s a somewhat depressing but also funny piece about “breaking up with the 2012 Pirates.”
  • The Pirates have won five straight series for the first time since 1992 (via @Pirates).
  • Remember when the Pirates weren’t even shown on ESPN’s poll asking who would win the NL Central? The network is singing a slightly different tune about the Bucs lately.
  • DK penned a humorous letter from the Pirates to Derrek Lee.
  • The Pirates posted some of this season’s new jumbotron videos to their YouTube page.

Bucs and Orioles tonight from Baltimore, 7:05.
