Right-hander Greg Burke is expected to rejoin the Mets this weekend in Philly from Triple-A Las Vegas, a source told ESPNNewYork.com.
Burke had been recently demoted to make room for the addition of right-hander Carlos Torres on the major league roster after a clause in his contract forced the Mets to promote him or lose him.
Because Burke has not spent 10 days in the minors, he can only rejoin the Mets if a major league player lands on the DL.
This likely means Jon Niese will be heading to the DL. Niese was removed from the game in the fourth inning last night with what the team reported as “left shoulder discomfort.”
After throwing his 61st pitch of the game, Niece winced in pain. He then motioned to the Mets dugout for the trainers to come out, pointed to his shoulder, and within a minute they all walked off the mound.
“My shoulder hurts,” Niese told Terry Collins.
Collins told reporters after the game that Niese was heading to New York for an MRI and further tests on Friday.
