The National League East is shaping up to be one of the more competitive divisions in baseball.  With the Washington Nationals looking to continue their reign as champs and the Atlanta Braves reloaded and ready to go, the division could have another fun two-team race.  However, the Philadelphia Phillies intend to compete, and the New York Mets are working on continued improvement. To prep you for the division rivalries, here are your NL East notes and updates: The Phillies are not concerned about Mike Adams' injury from last year despite news that Chris Carpenter relapsed from his injury and will not pitch this season.  Adams underwent the same surgery as Carpenter did to correct Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.  Todd Zolecki of MLB.com confirmed the organization has considered the injury and is not worried about their new two-year signing.   Despite his offseason surgery, Frank Francisco will be the New York Mets' closer.  According to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post, manager Terry Collins has said that Francisco will be the team's closer this year.  He underwent surgery on his elbow to remove bone spurs in December.  As spring training ramps up, there will be more injury updates to pass along.  In the mean time, we can enjoy the fact that there are actually baseball players on baseball fields practicing the game we all love. The Phillies are making sure that they have infield insurance this season. Their latest move is to sign Matt Tolbert - formerly of the Minnesota Twins - to a minor league deal.

Grading the Phillies' Offseason Signings and Acquisitions

With four days remaining until pitchers and catchers and catchers report to Clearwater and one week until the full team reports, it appears the Phillies are done signing mediocre infielders and outfielders that don't get on base. Well, for now. I think Endy Chavez is still out there, go get him Ruben! After all, he "doesn't care about walks, he cares about production...

Prospect Nation 2013: #16 OF Zach Collier

Last year, outfielder Zach Collier finally made the kind of impression the Phillies had long hoped for since they made him their supplemental 1st round draft choice (34th overall) in 2008. From the “Lost Tapes” files, I bring you a never-before-released interview with 2012 Phillies draft pick Zach Cooper.  The righty hurler was in the midst of an excellent campaign during his first season in the pro ranks, after the Phils selected him in the 15th round out of Central Michigan University, when I spoke with him in August.
