The turnaround time in this series is a little bit mind-boggling. I'm typing this up around 3 PM on Thursday afternoon. In about 25 hours, it's possible that either the Pirates or the Cardinals will be one win away from the NLCS. That's not quite the same urgency as the one-and-done elimination game on Tuesday, but it's awfully close.  The key for the Pirates at this point is to get a split in these first two games. That's obvious advice for the worse seed in a five-game series, but it certainly bears repeating. A split will set them up for Francisco Liriano at home in Game 3, plus another home game in front of that crazy PNC crowd (most likely started by Charlie Morton). Obviously nothing is a sure thing in baseball, particularly in these short series, but a split ensures the Pirates have a chance to prevent the series from ever coming back to St. Louis. That's really what the Bucs are playing for in the next day or so.  For all of the pre-series tal...

Wainwright and Cards await Pirates in NLDS

Andrew McCutchen and the Pittsburgh Pirates are riding high from their first postseason victory in 21 years. And now, after beating the Cincinnati Reds in the wild-card game, the Pirates are set to face another familiar foe in an unfamiliar month: the NL Central champion Cardinals in October. Game 1 of their division series is Thursday night in St. Louis. The Cardinals edged the...

MLB Game Picks - Thursday: October 3, 2013

I love Nick Swisher, I do. But his performance in the Wild Card Game last night against the Rays was so reminiscent of past post seasons for him. His first few times up, he had a strikeout and then grounded the ball right into the teeth of the shift when there were no fielders from second base to third. Then, when he had a man on first and third, instead of embracing or understanding...

NLDS Game 1: Cardinals blister Pirates 9-1

The St Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 in Game 1 of their NLDS matchup to take a 1-0 series lead. The Pirates really had no chance in this one. Adam Wainwright game out of the gates blazing, and set down the first 11 Pittsburgh hitters in order. Meanwhile, AJ Burnett was melting down on the hill for the Pirates. He allowed three baserunners over the first two...

Did Mike Matheny make a mistake in starting Lance Lynn in game two?

Yes, I know that hindsight is 20/20 and everyone questions a manager after things go wrong, but when Mike Matheny announced that Lance Lynn would start game 2 of the NLDS earlier this week, my first thought was, why Lance Lynn? Why not Shelby Miller or Joe Kelly or even Michael Wacha? Joe Kelly would seem to be the logical choice, given that he was the Cardinals best starter in...

Dugout Digest - dominant aces

Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw absolutely dealt yesterday, pitching the Cardinals and Dodgers to 1-0 NLDS leads over the Pirates and Braves respectively. Neither game was really all that close, and both series are in line to end like most of our staff predicted. PIC OF THE DAY Kris Medlen says on his face what all of the Braves were thinking last night. (Daniel...

NLDS Game 1: Cardinals 9 Pirates 1

There is almost no point in rehashing or dwelling on what happened in this game. AJ Burnett was terrible from the get-go; it was obvious in the first inning that his curve wasn't biting and that he couldn't locate anything the way that he wanted to. He danced through the raindrops for two innings, but he stood no chance against the Cardinals the second time through the lineup...

Cardinals 9, Pirates 1

Well, it turns out this postseason thing isn’t always as fun as it was for Bucs fans on Tuesday night. Today the Pirates had the tables turned on them, and the Cardinals were the ones enjoying an easy victory to the delight of the home fans. The difference, of course, is that it wasn’t a one game playoff and the Pirates will have the opportunity to bounce back in a matter of...

Pirates move on to NLDS after beating Reds 6-2

Andrew McCutchen was in mid-answer when teammate A.J. Burnett stuck a bottle of champagne inside the jersey of the star Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder and turned it upside down. ''Feels good,'' McCutchen said with a laugh as the bottle emptied, further drenching his already soaked uniform. ''I could get used to this.'' So could the city he plays...

The St Louis Cardinals used a 7 run inning and solid pitching to rout the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 in game one of the NL Division Series. Carlos Beltran‘s three-run homer sparked a seven-run third inning and the St. Louis Cardinals got seven strong innings from Adam Wainwright to open a commanding 7-0 in the third. Beltran has 15 home runs, 10 doubles and 28 RBIs in 35 postseason...

The Pirates scored 85. Now they meet in the postseason, for the first time since the Cardinals swept the Pirates in early September in a series that ultimately decided the NL Central.
