Experience against youth is featured in the game five pitching match up between the St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates.  On the mound for the Cardinals will be their ace Adam Wainwright.  He will be opposed by Pirates rookie Gerrit Cole. The Cardinals forced a decisive game five on the heels of an outstanding performance by rookie pitcher Michael Wacha.  He no-hit the Pirates through seven innings.  A Pedro Alvarez homer was the only hit the Pirates could muster in a, 2-1, defeat to the Cardinals in game four. This will be Wainwright’s 14 appearance in a post season game.  He was the Cardinals closer in 2006 and was on the mound as they clinched the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. Over the last three seasons the Cardinals are 7-1 when facing elimination in the playoffs.  Included in that 7-1 record is the Cardinals march from an 83-win Wild Card team to the 2011 World Series Champions. This will be only the 21st start in the Major League Baseball for Cole.  He was the first overall pick by the Pirates in the 2011 Major League Draft. This will be the 24th and final meeting this season between the Pirates and Cardinals.  Pittsburgh leads the season series 12-11.  If familiarity does breed contempt then these two teams absolutely despise each other. Wainwright was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals in game one of this series.  He went seven strong innings giving up only a home run. Alvarez hit that homer as well, he has three in the series, in the first postseason action of his career. The Pirates evened the series behind Cole’s masterful performance in game two.  He pitched six innings giving up just one run on two hits and a walk.  Cardinals catcher and MVP Yadier Molina was responsible for the lone run off of Cole with a homer. For all the thrills these two teams have produced in their previous 23 meetings this season anything is possible in tonight’s game five. You can catch the game on TBS at 8pm ET tonight.
