Back in 2013, the Houston Astros would select Mark Appel first overall. But unfortunately, the talented righty has never been able to put it all together. And now he’s reportedly taking a break from baseball.

In an interview with Bleacher Report’s Joon Lee, Appel has other things on his mind. But primarily, it’s health.

Maybe we should all get together and have a party. I don’t know what the future holds. I’m pursuing other things, but also trying to become a healthy human.

Currently, Appel is rehabbing from shoulder inflammation that hindered his 2017 season. But it’s been a career of hindrance thus far. Over five seasons across the minors (and one appearance in the fall league), Appel has just a 4.86 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. But it’s not just health.

I’m 26, I have a Stanford degree, I have many interests beyond baseball, which I still love, but I have a lot of things I care about. I enjoy challenging my mind. My last four years in baseball have challenged my mind.

That rings especially true for the 2014 season. Appel remembers it, but not so fondly.

There was times when I was the worst pitcher on my team. In 2014, maybe the worst pitcher in professional baseball.

A 9.74 ERA over just 44.1 innings certainly reflects that. But Appel just couldn’t figure it out.

I go out and pitch, and it’s the same thing every time. I can’t get an out. Walk. Hit. Walk. Hit. Then I’m out of the game. What just happened? Now it’s like I have four days before I get my hopes up again, get excited, build that confidence, not caring what happened in the past. Then the same thing happens again.

So we don’t know what the future holds for Appel, who was taken just one pick ahead of Kris Bryant. But we do know that it’s not baseball. For now, anyway.
