ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Evan Longoria avoided the disabled list, but as expected, he was not in the Tampa Bay Rays lineup Saturday following the irritation of the plantar fasciitis in his right foot Friday. Longoria, who has dealt with the condition for about a month, said it just felt different last night when describing a situation in the second inning of the Rays loss to the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field when he grounded out to second base and appeared to wince in pain as he passed first. He said his foot felt tight as he ran down the line, after hitting a pitch from right-hander Max Scherzer. The Rays plan to observe Longorias condition on a day-by-day basis. On Friday, manager Joe Maddon said Longoria would miss Saturdays game and likely Sundays as well. Infielderoutfielder Kelly Johnson played third base in Longorias place Friday, and Johnson was listed in the same position Saturday. I really dont have a definite prognosis, Longoria said. I know at least for now, Im not going to go on the DL, which is good. Im pretty optimistic about the way I feel today. Longoria said his injury is something that is not expected to be threatening long-term. He left Tropicana Field in a boot before Fridays game ended, bound for home, but he walked in his typical shoes Saturday, citing that he felt more comfortable in the shoes. Longoria, who has hit .298 (90 for 302) with 17 home runs and 47 RBI in 80 games this year, revealed that he feels the most pain when turning as a runner, such as times when he rounds bases. He said he had an X-ray completed a few weeks ago that did not show any negative signs. On whether he thought Tropicana Fields artificial turf had played a role in his condition, Longoria said, Its nobodys fault. Its just one of those things that happens to athletes. Plantar fasciitis, a common basketball injury, includes the inflammation of connective tissue on the sole of a foot. On June 14, when Longoria first spoke about the injury, he said he had no experience with the condition, but he described the sensation as "pretty painful." He said he felt decent at the beginning of a game, but the pain was strong by the end. Ive been lucky enough to go out there as many days as I have in a row with it not having gotten as bad as it got yesterday, Longoria said Saturday. I was happy to be able to play up until that point. And expecting it to get more sore gives me a little bit peace of mind in knowing that it will go away after its done. Maddon said head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield will observe Longoria daily. A further course of action will be dependent on how Longoria feels each day. Longoria, for his part, said he did not expect to pinch hit or serve as a designated hitter the next couple days. Were going to let it calm down a little bit, Maddon said. Hopefully, hes going to be able to do something over the next couple days in a positive way. Well just wait to find out. Thats one of those injuries thats not debilitating on any kind of permanent basis. Well just play it on through and see how he feels. Said Longoria: It could feel better in the next couple days. I honestly dont know. Meanwhile, the Rays also announced Saturday that right-hander Alex Colome was optioned to Triple-A Durham and infielder Ryan Roberts was recalled. Colome has allowed four earned runs, 14 hits and nine walks in 16 innings (three starts) with the Rays this season. Roberts, who was optioned to Durham on June 17 when outfielder Wil Myers was promoted, has hit .238 with three home runs and 13 RBI for the Rays this season.
