The Sports Jags:
After last night’s 6-5 loss to the Brewers, the Pirates have now lost 4 straight. The last time that happened, it was June and the Buccos were just 1 game over .500. This time around, the Bucs are 9 games over breaking even – they haven’t been within single digits of .500 since mid-July…and there’s still a long way to go before the streak is officially over. yea, we’re cynical but hey, it’s all we know how to be as Pirates fans.
Last night’s game didn’t help our attitude. Mike Fiers set the first 9 Buccos down in order and struck out the side in the third, and by the time Jose Tabata recorded the first Bucs hit to lead off the fourth, they were down 2-0. Andrew McCutchen fixed things that inning though with a 2-run single…that was about all the Bucs could do until the ninth.
Wandy Rodriguez wasn’t as terrible as he’s been since joining the Pirates. He lasted 6.2 innings and was finally finding the strike zone consistently – 65 of his 100 pitches went for strikes. He got a couple of double play ground balls and even worked himself out of a jam in the fifth. It gave us some hope for him. But even though Wandy had 2 ots with a runner on first in the seventh with the game tied, Clint Hurdle decided he shouldn’t finish the inning and pulled Wandy in exchange for Jared Hughes.
Hughes has been a little shaky the second half and he hit and walked the first two batter he saw to load the bases. That brought up Aramis Ramirez, who crushed a bases-clearing double, and Corey Hart drove Aramis home in the next at bat to make it 6-2.
The Buccos tried to get the rally going in the ninth after Rod Barajas brought them to within 3 with his seventh-inning solo homer. They drew back-to-back walks to start and Neil Walker made it 6-4 with zippy outs and two on. Then Pedro Alvarez and Jeff Clement went down swinging. Michael McKenry pinch hit for Clint Barmes and hit a run-scoring single after a great at bat. But the rally fell short thanks to Gaby Sanchez getting K’d to end it.
The Bucs went 3-6 with runners in scoring position – not terrible – but with 13 K’s and 2 huge errors by Barmes, 6-5 looked a lot better than what the score could have been. The Pirates haven’t lost 5 straight since April so Jeff Karstens has a huge task to get the ship righted tonight. This sucks.

Andrew McCutchen has had an impressive 2012 season. So much in fact that when Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle was asked about the All-Star center fielder, he said he was one of the most intelligent players he’s ever worked with in the 35-plus seasons he’s spent in professional baseball.
“I don’t think I’ve ever met a more intelligent, mentally tough, balanced young man in...
It’s been a long journey back to the big leagues for Jeff Clement. But on Friday, the first baseman was given the opportunity to battle his way back when the Pirates selected him from Triple-A Indianapolis to join the club in Pittsburgh.

Two-out hits hurt the Pirates on both sides of the ball on Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park. The Brewers did their damage from two-out knocks off Erik Bedard, while Pittsburgh wasn’t able to capitalize on two-out hitting. Through August 1st of the 1910 Pittsburgh Pirates season, the defending World Series champs had gone 50-36, putting them in third place. The Giants had a half game lead on the Pirates, but they trailed the Cubs by a full seven games, with just over two months left in the season. Reported first by ESPN and then I saw the same report for John Heyman of CBS, the Dodgers have just claimed Adrian Gonzalez off waivers from the Red Sox. That is the type of piece to the puzzle the Pirates would love to have. But they would have absolutely no chance to sign him. He would cost the Pirates as much as Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker’s soon to be contract, and...

Whattaya know? The Pirates losing to the Brewers? Other contenders making moves while the Pirates are calling up guys like Jeff Clement. Some people are kind of getting on the Dodgers for caring enough. For doing what it takes to win. The Pirates could have made bigger moves, they didn’t. They obviously didn’t deem it [...]
