Remember three days ago? The Red Sox were full of hope, preparing to honor their beloved ballpark, trying to use the parade of legends as a launching pad for their season. Instead, the Yankees turned Fenway Park into a launching pad of their own, thrusting their rivals into the throes of panic in the process. Just imagine how thorough this dismantling could have been had CC Sabathia vs. Daniel Bard not been rained out. I thought the ceremony was beautifully done. Perhaps if I were a Red Sox fan I would have appreciated all the non-legends, but still, I recognized most of the players despite never having watched them play.  That itself speaks volumes of the history this Red Sox organization has. There were so many beautiful touches – the piece written by John Williams and performed by the Boston Pops specifically for this event; the first pitches being thrown from the stands by a group including Caroline Kennedy; proposing a toast to the ballpark per FDR’s posthumous wishes. Not so g...

Yankees beat Red Sox 15-9 after trailing 9-0

Nothing was going right for the Yankees as Freddy Garcia didn’t have it and they fell behind 9-0 by the 5th inning. However, Mark Teixeira homered in the 6th to get the Yankees on the board, Nick Swisher hit a grand slam in the 7th, and then Teixeira homered again as they pulled to within 9-8. Another seven run inning in the 8th capped off an amazing, instant Yankees Classic...

On Michael Pineda, A.J. Burnett, Pedro Feliciano, and the media's double standard

I just want to, for once, admit that Squawker Jon was totally right on something. Specifically, he called the Michael Pineda injury issue correctly three weeks ago, comparing it to Phil Hughes' tendinitis, and mocking Joe Girardi for calling the diagnosis at the time "great news:"When reporters noted that Hughes was also diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis last year...

Your Morning Dump... Where it's not Valentine's fault

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The last Red Sox [team stats] manager to receive the kind of booing that was rained upon Bobby Valentine yesterday was Don Zimmer. And that was more than 30 years ago. But here’s the thing: While there...

Aaron Cook Looking Sharp at Triple-A With Opt-Out Looming, Will Middlebrooks Swinging Hot Bat

Things have not gone as planned for the Boston Red Sox, but down on the farm with the club's Triple-A Pawtucket, there are plenty of things to be pleased about. Perhaps most interestingly has been the work of veteran right-hander Aaron Cook, who was sent down at the end of the spring training. With the big club's pitching all over the place, Cook has been a rock for the PawSox...

Andy Pettitte, Michael Pineda, and the Latest on the Yanks Rotation

The setback to Michael Pineda this past weekend where he was shut down after only 15 pitches on Saturday, along with the recent struggles of the Yankees rotation, have turned the signing of Andy Pettitte from a “luxury item” to a thing of urgent necessity. So how concerned are the Yankees with Pineda’s latest setback? I spoke with a member of the Yankees organization on...

Red Sox P Bard to stay in starting rotation

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Daniel Bard will stay in the starting rotation, but may be available to pitch in relief early in the week. The Red Sox will skip Bard's scheduled start in the rotation after Sunday's game against the New York Yankees was rained out. There was speculation that Bard could be moved to closer after a spectacular meltdown Saturday...

Derek Lowe has 2004 Red Sox World Series ring stolen from Florida home

Unfortunately, we have heard this story one too many times. Like several other athletes before him, Derek Lowe recently fell victim to a home burglary. The most troubling part of the break in is that one of the valuables that was stolen cannot easily be replaced. According to the News-Press, $90,000 worth of possessions were stolen from Lowe’s home in Florida, one of which was...

Bobby Valentine Far From Sole Reason for Red Sox' Struggles and Other Thoughts From the Week in Baseball

The Yankees sure know how to ruin a party, huh? The Red Sox' longtime rivals came into Fenway Park this weekend and put a hurting on the Boston pitching staff, taking the first two games of the series before rain washed away any chances of a sweep on Sunday night. It's clear that Sox fans aren't happy with what they've seen on the field, but for some reason, that...

Why Hall opted out of deal with Yankees

Super-utility man Bill Hall, who excelled with the Red Sox in 2010 before struggling with the Astros and Giants last season, would like to correct a misconception. Hall, a 10-year veteran, says teams assume that he will not play at Triple A because he elected free agency after failing to make the Yankees’ Opening Day roster. But, as Hall puts it, “That’s not the case....

Kevin Youkilis Marries Tom Brady's Sister in Stealth Ceremony on Red Sox' Off Day

Kevin Youkilis can now add "husband" to the list of words describing the Boston third baseman. Youkilis and Julie Brady, the sister of Tom Brady, have been engaged for a bit, but the couple decided to skip the pomp and wedding bells for a private ceremony at their home in Weston on Thursday, the Boston Herald reports. It's not as if Youkilis tied the knot and then ran...

Extra Quote of the Day

Are you trying to kill me?   -Bobby Valentine to Alfredo Aceves when he made a visit to the mound in the 9th after Aceves got a LONG out that everyone thought was a homer for a wee bit.  Bobby may drive me crazy, but the dude has jokes.  Mad jokes.

Weekly game thread: Apr. 23 – Apr. 29

The Yankees had a solid week last week splitting a four game series with the Twins and then taking two out of two against the Red Sox over the weekend before Sunday’s rainout. This week is about as tough as it gets as the Yankees face the Rangers and Tigers three times each. Mon: Yankees at Texas, 7:05 pm, MY9 and ESPN. LHP CC Sabathia (1-0, 5.48) vs. LHP Derek Holland (2-0...

Rain Out

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have been Postponed due to rain. No make up game has been scheduled yet. Sabathia was supposed to pitch tonight, but his start got pushed foward to tomorrow night in Texas against the Rangers. Podcast Episode 4: Goodbye Bahston, Howdy Big D

This episode was recorded before yeterday's finale between the Yankees and Red Sox was rained out, so it includes no discussion about the upcoming showdown between Hiroki Kuroda and Yu Darvish. I read somewhere that it will be the seventh time in MLB history that two Japanese pitchers will face each other in a game. Kuroda doesn't want to lose face, I'm sure, so he&...
