On Monday night, Hiroki Kuroda provided something of a steadying presence in the Yankees’ shaky rotation. If what we’ve seen in his last two starts is anything resembling his true level of competence, that provides the Yankees with two reliable starters. Still, that leaves three question marks. One of those question marks failed to provide any convincing answers last night, as Phil Hughes served up four runs on four hits and a walk, striking out six in 5.2 innings. He was far from awful, but he was equally removed from good. Of those four hits, two vanished behind the blue borders of the Yankee Stadium outfield, marking the sixth and seventh homers he has allowed in 21.2 innings this season. This was probably his best start of the season, which isn’t saying much. However, he had a 95-MPH fastball for the first time all year, so there is hope of a turnaround. With Michael Pineda hurt and Freddy Garcia finally banished to the bullpen, Hughes will be given every opportunity to build on...

Yanks 3B Chavez leaves during at-bat with whiplash

Eric Chavez left the New York Yankees' game against the Baltimore Orioles during his at-bat in the fifth inning because of a whiplash injury and possible concussion. The Yankees say the oft-injured third baseman sustained the injury in the top of the fifth Wednesday night while diving for J.J. Hardy's double down the line. Still, Chavez tried to bat in the bottom half....

Clemens, Pettitte & Nova: They're All Connected

In 2001, while Roger Clemens was a Yankee, he set a franchise record of 16 straight winning decisions. Several years later he and his then good friend Andy Pettitte were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs. Clemens denied it. Pettitte did not and was accused of "mis-remembering" by Clemens. This morning Pettitte will likely conclude his testimony against Clemens...

ANDY PETTITTE: LYING FOR JESUS

Apparently Jesus told Andy Pettitte that lying about his conversations with Roger Clemens is okay as long as you present yourself as an "aw shucks" hick that "misremembers and stuff."This is very similar to Jesus telling Andy to play for Houston because the team owner was a lunatic born again Christian too. Or the time Jesus told Andy to retire and spend more...

Mariano Rivera Carted Off During Batting Practice

From Wallace Matthews: Mariano Rivera was just taken off the field at Kauffman Stadium on a cart after apparently injuring his right knee while shagging flies during batting practice. Witnesses said Rivera was “writhing in pain” after the injury, which may have occurred from running into the wall after a long fly. The Yankees have issued no official information yet, but from...

Farnham in Spotlight Catching Andy Pettitte

Given the amount of catching prospects in the Yankees system – even with the trade of Jesus Montero to Seattle – Jeff Farnham has gone about his career as a farmhand mostly out of the spotlight. The 24-year-old , a native of Las Vegas drafted in the 27th round in 2009, is not mentioned with the likes of Austin Romine, Gary Sanchez or J.R. Murphy. Yet, when Andy Pettitte’s comeback...

Pettitte: '50-50' on Clemens HGH talk

Pitcher Andy Pettitte acknowledged under cross-examination Wednesday that he might have misunderstood Roger Clemens when Pettitte said he heard his former teammate say he used human growth hormone. Asked by Clemens' lawyer if it was fair to say it was ''50-50'' that Pettitte misunderstood the conversation from about a dozen years ago, Pettitte responded, '...

Series Preview: Yanks @ Royals

Coming off a surprisingly difficult series against a division foe in the Orioles, the Yankees look to regain their winning ways against the struggling Royal. This season the Royals have had a tough time at their home ballpark not winning a single home game so far this season. Tonight, the Yankees have first time starter, David Phelps (0-0, 3.57 ERA) taking the mound. Phelps has been...

New York Yankees: You Are Not Alone

Ryan Howard (left) and Albert Pujols (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The New York Yankees are not the only team happy that April is finally over, as a few other MLB teams are hoping to turn things around in May. So, here is a quick list of the Yankees and three other troubled teams who should be much better than they were in April: 1 -  Back in Spring Training, the New York Yankees were...

Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens – Paris and Nicole for a New Generation

On Tuesday, Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens sat 20 feet apart, something that probably hasn’t happened since “Cotton Eye Joe” was a staple at Yankee Stadium. Pettitte was on the witness stand. Clemens was at the defense table. Eye contact was nowhere to be found. What was the topic du jour? A remark about human growth hormone Pettitte recalled hearing from his longtime teammate...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 2, Orioles 1

When the Yankees got their season on track with a sweep in Baltimore, I considered it nothing more than the Bombers beating a team they were supposed to beat. Now, that’s not to downplay the significance of those three wins; taking care of the easy ones is more indicative of future success than beating the beasts. As it it turns out, Baltimore may not be all that bad. I’m not...

NEW YORK -- Brian Matusz pitched 6 1/3 efficient innings, helping Buck Showalter record the 1,000th win of his managerial career as the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Tuesday night.
