The Yankees had every excuse to mail in last night’s game. For starters, they have a 3:00 game in Boston today, and a nice, quick outing would have given them some measure of rest before this important series. Then Phil Hughes came out and got lit up in the first inning, and there had to be some temptation to pack it in and just hack away at every half-decent pitch. In fact, Derek Jeter swung at the first pitch from Anthony Swarzak and grounded out. But then the star of the night set a more positive tone. Curtis Granderson came into the game with three home runs, but had not yet really met the standards of last year’s MVP candidacy. Having struck out nearly as often as he’d reached base (10 hits, eight walks, 14 strikeouts in 56 plate appearances), he met with hitting coach Kevin Long before the game to work on his timing, and as he did when he first got to New York, Granderson successfully parlayed the coaching into results.
