A season after the NY Mets ownership had to answer a lot of questions regarding their relationship with disgraced financial wizard Bernie Madoff, the Mets are finally showing some life on the field. This is probably coming to great sighs of relief to the Mets faithful, especially considering that recent free agent prizes have been busts and staff ace Johan Santana is out for another season with a bum shoulder. It's a new season, practically a new team, and the Mets look like contenders, even if it is only a week into the season.Yesterday, the Mets tagged Roy Halladay for another win, giving them a 5-2 record. Yes, I know it's only a week of games, but considering the Mets finished with a 74-88 record last season, this is cause for optimism.Met's catcher, John BuckCurrently, the Mets are second in the NL in runs scored, fifth in home runs, second in RBIs, fifth in total bases, and third in OPS. The Mets are being lead by catcher John Buck, doing his best Mike Piazza impersonation. He's leading the team in home runs, batting average, RBI's, and hits. Of course, David Wright is still doing what he does best. He's clocking in with a .333 average and is right behind Buck with 8 hits this young season. Second baseman Daniel Murphy is currently hitting over .300 and is on pace to have career highs in multiple hitting categories. As far as pitching is concerned, young hurler Matt Harvey is on his way to establishing himself as the ace on the staff. He's 2-0, winning both starts, and has a 0.64 ERA. Harvey is also tied for second in the NL with 19 strikeouts. To go with only four walks, his WHIP of 0.57 has him in fifth amongst National League pitchers. As a staff, the Mets pitchers are third in team ERA (2.29), and are in the top half of the NL in opponents batting average, strikeouts, walks allowed, and quality starts. They may not win a World Series, or even get to the playoffs considering how deep the NL East is, but considering what many Mets fans expected this year, improvement is a great thing to see.
