Sheridan:
With a sinking feeling, I watched last night's action unfurl at Shea Stadium knowing full well that the Mets were hellbent on losing to the Chicago Cubs. Little did I know they would lose 9-6 in the 10th inning. Even when the Mets had the bases loaded, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, in a 6-6 tie, I could not overcome the dark doubt in the far recesses of my mind that prevented any sense of hope from materializing. Thinking purely of survival as a fan, I was hoping Mets manager Jerry Manuel would have Ryan Church execute a safety squeeze or suicide squeeze with the bases juiced. I don't know if Ryan Church can bunt, but I didn't care. I had no confidence in Church getting a hit against Cubs reliever Bobby Howry.
Church grounded to Chicago's second baseman Ronny Cedeno, who threw a strike to nail Dan Murphy at the plate. With that play, I knew the game was over. There was no way the Mets were going to win. I knew there was no chance of the batter following Ryan Church, Roman Castro, getting a hit to win the game and I was correct. I am one smart guy when it comes to seeing the inevitability of defeat. Hell, I've been in relationships that were doomed from the beginning, and I continued dating the women, so I can accurately forecast when a much needed win is firmly out of the Mets grasp.
