Could the Oakland A’s be in line to pull off a major trade this offseason? General manager Billy Beane is no stranger to big winter trades, and Joe Stiglich of Comcast Sports Bay Area posited on Wednesday night that it might not be surprising to see the team make a splash before spring training kicks off in February.
The most interesting passage in Stiglich’s piece, by far, is the assertion that:
Indications from within the organization are that no position players – at least those on the major league roster – are off-limits in trade talk.
It may appear outlandish or unexpected to imagine the A’s, a team coming off two consecutive A.L. West titles, to trade a key player such as Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Reddick or Josh Donaldson. Beane, though, has made a career out of pulling off outlandish, unexpected deals whether the A’s were rebuilding or fielding a competitive team.
