Old Cliff Lee is at it again. The 2008 Cy Young winner shut Los Angeles down for seven innings, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out ten in Philadelphia’s 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. Ted Lilly was hit with his fifth loss of the season, despite allowing only two runs in six innings of work.

The Dodgers scratched out nine hits, all singles. A third of those hits came off the bat of Jamey Carroll, and Juan Uribe and Aaron Miles had two each. James Loney, Tony Gwynn, and Jerry Sands were the only other batters to reach base.

The game did have one highlight however: the debut of top prospect Dee Gordon. Gordon, son of former pitcher Tom Gordon, will see time at shortstop on a regular basis. The thin infielder had an OBP of .361 with Triple-A Albuquerque this year before being called up. Gordon appeared in the loss as a pinch runner, moving from first to third on a single by Aaron Miles in the ninth and scoring the only run for LA.

The Dodgers saw a lot of turnover before the game. Ivan De Jesus and John Ely were optioned to Triple-A, while Jay Gibbons and Juan Castro were designated for assignment. Marcus Thames, Blake Hawksworth, and Uribe were all activated from the 15-day disabled list to join Gordon. All four appeared in Monday’s game.

In addition to seeing Gordon rise to the major league level, Dodger fans saw more influx of youth during the MLB Draft. With the 16th overall pick, the Dodgers selected Chris Reed, a left-hander out of Stanford University. Though Reed is currently pitching for the Cardinal as the team’s closer, assistant GM Logan White envisions him as a starter in the long run. Reed is being advised by Scott Boras; this selection is the first time the team has chosen a player with ties to Boras since the Luke Hochevar debacle in 2005.

With Jon Garland on the DL, Rubby De La Rosa will make his first career big league start Tuesday, sharing the rubber with Roy Oswalt.
