Braves camp less uneventful than planned

Heading to camp a month ago, the Braves really had no spots up for grabs. Sure, there was that fifth starting spot, but the three candidates were obvious: left-hander Mike Minor and rookie right-handers Randall Delgado and Julio Teheran. The main question mark was whether the Braves would be OK with rookie Tyler Pastornicky at shortstop. That question became slightly more urgent...

Battle for final roster spot heats up

By Andrew Hirsh After a successful MLB debut last season, Jose Constanza entered Spring Training with the inside track to land the Braves’ final bench spot. And while he is still in a good position to win the job, the competition for that roster spot has grown increasingly fierce. Emerging out of no where in 2011, Constanza quickly became a fan favorite, filling in admirably for...

This Afternoon; Wada and Hammel

This afternoon, the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves played to a 2-2, 10-inning tie in Buena Vista, FL. The positive news on the afternoon involved Tsuyoshi Wada, who made his first appearance of Spring Training, and gave up one run in two innings of work. He also struck out three batters. Wada does not throw particularly hard; however, his location was spot on when he pitched...

Mets starter Jonathon Niese allowed six hits -- all singles -- in 5 1-3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. He threw 49 of 72 pitches for strikes and induced two double plays. Adam Jones thinks Kevin Youkilis’ injury was big reason for September collapse

The Red Sox’s spectacular September collapse last season just isn’t going to go away, and this time it’s Orioles outfielder Adam Jones giving his two cents. Jones, whose Orioles capped the Sox’s downfall with a walk-off win on the last day of the season, thinks that Kevin Youkilis‘ absence for the final 13 games of the season was something Boston wasn’t able to...

Red Sox 3, Orioles 3(10)

Wei-Yin Chen became the first Baltimore pitcher to throw five innings this spring and the Orioles tied Boston 3-all in 10 innings Saturday in a game of split squads. Chen also displayed a nifty pickoff move that nabbed two runners. Making his third spring start, Chen blanked Boston until the fifth when Ryan Lavarnway and Pedro Ciriaco singled and Nate Spears hit a three-run homer...

Spring Training: Orioles 6, Yankees 3

O's are 5-7 so far in Spring Training; a 68 win full season pace (not that it matters). Endy Chavez is batting .409/.458/.591, which hopefully won't encourage Buck to make him the team's lead-off hitter (which he was for this game). Nick Johnson is at .348/.464/.478; Mark Rernolds, JJ Hardy, and Matt Antonelli have each walked more times than they've struck out (though...
