Nick Blackburn had another impressive start, striking out three and allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings for a Minnesota Twins split squad in a 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. The right-hander, who is coming off an inconsistent, injury-slowed 7-10 season, has given up four hits and no runs through seven innings this spring. Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who struggled late last year with a slight right labrum tear after coming over in a trade from the Rangers, went 2 for 4 with a double to lead the Orioles. He came in hitting .227 for the spring. Chris Parmelee and Ryan Doumit had a pair of hits each for Minnesota. Chris Tillman got the start for Baltimore and gave up four hits and a run in three innings.

Blackburn sharp again, but Orioles prevail

FORT MYERS (AP) Nick Blackburn said he's throwing better than ever. The results back him up. The Twins' right-hander, who ended last year on the disabled list before having offseason forearm surgery, gave up one hit and no runs over four innings of a Minnesota Twins split-squad's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. "I honestly don't remember having...

Sano emerges as a top prospect for Twins

FORT MYERS, Fla. Twins prospect Miguel Sano is a man among boys. Not literally, of course. At just 18 years old, Sano is one of the youngest players in Minnesota's minor league camp this spring. Judging by his baby-faced appearance, you'd think he was perhaps 15. But when Sano takes the field with the other Twins minor leaguers at the Lee County Sports Complex, he turns...

Twins drop Diamond in first round of cuts

FORT MYERS, Fla. The first round of cuts came Thursday for the Minnesota Twins, as they optioned six players and reassigned three others to the minor league camp. Pitchers Deolis Guerra, Lester Oliveros, Scott Diamond and Tyler Robertson and outfielder Darin Mastroianni were all optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Outfielder Oswaldo Arcia was optioned to High-A Fort Myers. Three players...

Mauer plays first for Twins in win over Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Joe Mauer made his first spring training start at first base for a Minnesota Twins split squad in a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The Twins' regular catcher went 1 for 2 with a walk. First baseman Justin Morneau went 0 for 4 as the designated hitter. Red Sox ace Jon Lester struck out two, walked one and hit two batters in in four innings...

Red Sox 3, Orioles 3(10)

Wei-Yin Chen became the first Baltimore pitcher to throw five innings this spring and the Orioles tied Boston 3-all in 10 innings Saturday in a game of split squads. Chen also displayed a nifty pickoff move that nabbed two runners. Making his third spring start, Chen blanked Boston until the fifth when Ryan Lavarnway and Pedro Ciriaco singled and Nate Spears hit a three-run homer...

Baseball America Predicts Orioles to Finish Last in Division

Good morning all out there. Hope everyone is enjoying a warm, wonderful Thursday in the Mid-Atlantic region, specifically around Baltimore. Well, Baseball America recently posted their predictions where all 30 teams should finish in 2012. Sadly, they – much like pretty much every other newspaper, news station, media outlet, blog and whatever else – picked the Baltimore Orioles...

The Pitching

As it is every year, to win, you need to have pitching. I am not sure the Orioles have an abundance of it right now -- at least arms that are very good. In fact, I don’t know what to think. One question I have on my mind is this: who in the world starts on Opening Day? If I were a betting man, it would be Tommy Hunter; however, he's been dealing with some issues, but...

Tillman Does Well on Friday; Robert Andino

After a losing stretch during this week, the Orioles got into the win column again, this time defeating the Minnesota Twins, 3-1, in Fort Myers, FL. Pitcher Chris Tillman was the story of the game. His performance was a bit uneven, but he threw well as he went 3 1/3 innings, allowed a run in the fourth innings, walked two, struck out one and allowed four hits. He still allowed...

Tigers Defeat Orioles; Improved Matusz Faces off Against Justin Verlander

It was a tough year for Brian Matusz in 2011; however, if his Spring Training is an indication of the road that is to come, things are 180 degrees from what they were last season. Yes, the Baltimore Orioles lost to the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, in Grapefruit League action, but the story of the day was Matusz. He continued his strong showing from his last start into Thursday, going...
