This afternoon, the Orioles defeated the Atlanta Braves, 2-1, in Grapefruit League action. Jai Miller and Xavier Avery drove in runs late in the game after trailing 1-0; however, the Orioles got another solid pitching performance from the hurlers on the mound.
Jason Hammel pitched his first game as Oriole, tossing two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and walked one. Pitchers Kevin Gregg, Darren O’Day, Pedro Strop, Michael Socolovich – who earned the victory - and Troy Patton each pitched a scoreless inning.
Zach Phillips gave up a run off an Eric Hinske homer in the seventh inning. Overall, he pitched two innings, and one gave up a hit – the Hinske longball.
Atlanta starter Mike Minor pitched three innings of scoreless ball.
I’m not sure if Jai Miller may have a role with the team when Opening Day comes around; however, he is making the most his playing time so far. He is 27 and far from a young prospect, but is an intriguing player.
He had two hits in three at-bats,...
BEST OF MAXIM
I wanted to comment on this article in Baseball America last week that breaks down the Orioles' debacle involving the attempted signing of Korean high school pitcher Seong-Min Kim.I have been pretty approving of all the changes the Orioles have been making under Dan Duquette and thought that shaking up the organization and focusing on international markets are fine ideas. The...
The wins and losses are meaningless, so are most of the stats. But there is plenty to watch every year in Spring Training. A little late with this but since we are a week into the exhibition season, I wanted to outline the 5 things I am watching for while the O's tune up in Sarasota.1. Ryan Flaherty and Matt AntonelliThe former was the Orioles' Rule 5 pick, the latter a minor...

PRAISE THE MAN
The Rays are a grateful bunch, so you could imagine that they wouldn't pass up a chance to thank the guy who helped them last year.
I have finally come to terms with the fact that I will not be attending Oriole Spring Training 2012 and I have not been since the inaugural training in Sarasota in 2010. (sigh....)Since I cannot accurately update my Unofficial Guide to Oriole Spring Training, I instead point you to Spring Training Connection's review of Ed Smith Stadium. It is very thorough and a great resource...
Oriole left fielder Nolan Reimold took a fastball to the face in the first inning of today's exhibition game against the Tampa Bay Rays and from all accounts, it was pretty nasty.Three innings later, we learned that IF Ryan Flaherty, the club's Rule 5 pick, took a pitch in the shoulder via Roch Kubatko on Twitter. Jorge Arangure replied to that tweet:Forget, for a moment...

This afternoon, the Orioles earned their second win of the Grapefruit League exhibition season as they defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-0.
Wei-Yin Chen – who is one of the new Asian arms on the roster – struck three in two innings. In his first time against major league hitters, he did well and considering his struggles in the beginning of camp, it was nice to see. According...

This afternoon in Grapefruit League action, the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay rays played to a 3-3 tie. Baltimore’s Jake Arrieta made his spring debut on the mound and threw two scoreless innings in which he did not allow a hit.
Even though Arrieta won 10 games last year, he ended up needing surgery (to remove bone spurs in his elbow) last summer and missed two plus months of...
Baltimore newcomer Wei-Yin Chen made a neat debut, pitching two scoreless innings Wednesday as the Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 6-0.
Chen, a native of Taiwan, pitched in Japan the last four seasons. He retired the Twins in order in the first and, after giving up a leadoff single to Aaron Bates in the second, struck out Brian Dinkelman, Sean Burroughs and Ben Revere.
