The Baltimore Orioles have signed free agent pitcher Dontrelle Willis.

Willis signed a minor league contract with the team. He was previously with the Philadelphia Phillies this spring, and struggled.

He allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings while walking four in the spring. Last year, with the Cincinnati Reds, he had a 5.00 ERA in 75 2/3 innings.

He did hold left-handed batters to a .127 batting average.

He will complete for a spot in the Orioles bullpen. If he does not make the team out of spring training, he will be sent to the minors, as a starting pitcher.

The Utley Era Wasn’t Supposed to Go Like This

So we’ve learned that Chase Utley probably won’t be ready for Opening Day, a reality many of us assumed but wanted badly not to hear this season. In the last episode of Phillies Nation TV, Pat asked why Utley hadn’t yet seen an inning in the field or a plate appearance against live pitching. It was a valid question that offered more and more room for pessimism the longer you...

Baltimore Orioles Latest Team to Hope for Dontrelle Willis Resurgence

The Baltimore Orioles are hoping to do something that the Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies could not do over the past four years. The Orioles have signed pitcher Dontrelle Willis in hopes that they can resurrect his career. They should not be holding their collective breathes. Willis, the former 22 game winner with the Florida...

The D-Train Comes to Baltimore...

It's no secret that the Orioles need as much pitching as they can get; therefore, they signed left-hander Dontrelle Willis today. From the Orioles.com: SARASOTA, Fla. -- In the Orioles' continuing efforts to stockpile pitching, the club signed lefty Dontrelle Willis, who will be utilized as a reliever, to a Minor League deal on Tuesday night. Willis, who signed a...

D-Train makes a stop in Baltimore

On Sunday I wrote about Dontrelle Willis getting released by the Philadelphia Phillies. To my surprise, the Baltimore Orioles officially signed Willis to a minor-league deal on Wednesday.  I’m not sure what the Orioles gain with this deal, more than likely a LOOGY, but Willis really has to step his game up if he wants to make it to the big club once the season gets under way...

D-Train’s career comes to a halt, but it does leave me with bigger questions

Dontrelle Willis was once on top of the baseball world. The hard-tossing lefty took the baseball world by storm in 2005 when he won 22 games, threw five shutouts, and came in second in the NL Cy Young race. Fast forward seven years, and this once promising career is all but finished.  In his first five seasons (2003-2007) Dontrelle Willis won a total of 68 games. Since then...

Chase Utley’s Knee Injury Lingers

Last season, Chase Utley opened the season on the disabled list due to knee tendinitis. He would miss 46 games. Now, reports are surfacing at CSN Philadelphia that the 33-year-old second baseman has left Phillies camp to see a specialist for his continually sore knees. It’s now considered “likely” Utley will begin the season on the disabled list, putting the Phillies’ entire...

Sox May Pursue Joe Blanton

Thus sayeth the Bleacher creatures. The numbers are ... well, not terrible, but not inspiring. He's 31, and coming off his worst year since his rookie year, though it looks like an injury-shortened season. They also reportedly has a deal back in December 2010, which never occurred. So either: a) the Sox see something that has held their interest, or b) the Sox are a little more...

Vlad Ready To Play In Japan

It’s hard to believe nobody wants Vladimir Guerrero’s services.  Maybe he’s just being stubborn.  The 37-year old with 449 career home runs has been awaiting a call from an MLB club all offseason and has heard nothing.  Guerrero last played for the Baltimore Orioles in 2011, where he made $8 million, hit .290, 13 home runs,

More infield woes for Phillies

The Phillies say they aren’t seeking a replacement for second baseman Chase Utley, who left the team Monday to be evaluated by a specialist.   But their latest injury – a broken bone in infielder Michael Martinez’s foot – almost certainly means that the team will pursue a utility man.   Martinez suffered his injury Tuesday when he was hit by a pitch in a Grapefruit League...

Phillies 4, Orioles 1

Roy Halladay rebounded from a horrid outing against Minnesota with six strong innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 Tuesday. After allowing five runs and seven hits in 2 2-3 innings against Minnesota last week, Halladay gave up a run and three hits in six innings. He struck out five, hit a batter and walked none. The Orioles' run came on a first...

Health is the Focus for LHP Prospect Hernandez

After undergoing shoulder surgery last April, lefty pitcher Nick Hernandez has been striving to get healthy so that he can continue living his dream of playing professional baseball. A 12th round draft selection in 2009 out of the University of Tennessee by the Phillies, Hernandez expects to return to the mound soon after being out of action for a lengthy stretch.Hernandez, the...
