Yonder Alonso drove in two runs and the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 Monday night to become the last NL team to get to 10 victories. Edinson Volquez, obtained in an offseason trade with Cincinnati, got his first victory with the Padres, with some help from the bullpen. The Rockies lost their fourth straight game and their shaky rotation took another hit. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz left with a bruised right quad in the fourth, two innings after he was hit by a line drive by Volquez. Pomeranz stuck around long enough to hit his first career homer, driving a ball off the facade of the second-deck in left field off Volquez with one out in the third. Volquez (1-2) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings, struck out five and walked four. He allowed a run in the sixth on two singles and a walk before being relieved by Joe Thatcher with runners on first and second and one out. Thatcher struck out Todd Helton before Brad Brach came on and caught Michael Cuddyer looking at strike three. Carlos Gonzalez singled in a run that inning to pull the Rockies to 3-2. Pomeranz was hit on the right leg by Volquez's liner with one out in the second. He fielded the ball and threw out Volquez. He was checked by the trainer and stayed in the game. Pomeranz (0-2) was the fourth straight Rockies starter who failed to reach the sixth inning. He allowed three runs and five hits in three innings, walked three and struck out two. Alonso singled in runs in the first and third innings. Another run scored in the second on a wild pitch. Dale Thayer pitched the ninth for his second career save and first since his major league debut on May 22, 2009, at Florida while with Tampa Bay. NOTES: The Rockies rescinded the option to RHP Jhoulys Chacin to Triple-A Colorado Springs and placed him on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to Wednesday. Chacin was optioned to the Sky Sox on Wednesday after getting off to a rocky start, going 0-3 with a 7.30 ERA. ... Padres LF Carlos Quentin, who started the season on the disabled list, said he thinks he's getting closer to being activated. He returned from a rehab assignment to Triple-A Tucson on Monday to check in with the team's staff, and is scheduled to go to Class-A Lake Elsinore beginning Tuesday to continue his rehab assignment. Quentin had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee during spring training. Quentin said he's not sure if he'll be ready for a road trip that starts Friday at Philadelphia. ... The Rockies will call up right-hander Alex White and left-hander Christian Friedrich from Triple-A to start the final two games of this series. White is scheduled to start Tuesday night while Friedrich will go on Wednesday. White was one of four pitchers acquired by the Rockies for right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez in July. ... Jeff Suppan (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start of the season Tuesday for the Padres.

Daily Friar 5.8.12

The Padres avoided a 4 game losing streak last night. The pitching stepped it up last night, and the offense got just enough done to beat the Rockies. They're only 3 games ahead of us, so if by some miracle we can pull out a sweep then we can possibly be a game behind them when it's all said and done. So close to getting out of the cellar! Here's hoping the Padres can...

Dick sits through inning after inning of boring Padres baseball and suddenly he has something to...

Chipper angry over Moyer's accusations

DENVER (AP) -- Chipper Jones was still fuming Sunday over claims by Colorado Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer that the Atlanta star had been stealing signs and relaying them to Braves hitters. Today's Starter: Christian Friedrich

The Colorado Rockies enter Wednesday last in the National League in team ERA and with just one more victory (12) than the San Diego Padres (11). Starting pitching has been the Rockies downfall as injuries and ineffectiveness have kept the third best offense in the N.L. from notching more wins.
