Logan Forsythe and Alexi Amarista had key hits in a five-run fourth inning, and the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Tuesday night to send the slumping World Series champions to their 10th loss in 13 games. St. Louis maintained a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL's second wild-card berth but dropped 10 1/2 games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central. Forsythe, a homer shy of the cycle in Monday night's 11-3 win over St. Louis, doubled in two runs and Amarista added a two-run triple as San Diego erased a 2-0 deficit in the fourth. Edinson Volquez (10-10) allowed three runs - two earned - and four hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking six. He has a career-high 100 walks, the most in the majors this season. Luke Gregerson pitched 1 2-3 innings for his sixth save in 10 chances, finishing San Diego's 16th win in 21 games. Adam Wainwright (13-13), hurt by rookie shortstop Pete Kozma's error in the fourth, gave up five runs - two earned - five hits and four walks in six innings. He had been 3-1 with a 1.07 ERA in seven career appearances against San Diego. St, Louis was just 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners. The Cardinals have lost seven of their last eight road games. With St. Louis ahead 2-0 in the fourth, San Diego loaded the bases with one out when Kozma threw wildly on Will Venable's grounder, and Chase Headley and Yasmani Grandal reached on an infield single. Yonder Alonso walked on a full-count pitch, forcing in a run, and Forsythe hit a two-run double to right-center for a 3-2 lead. After Alonso got thrown out at home trying to score on Cameron Maybin's grounder to second baseman Skip Schumaker, Amarista hit a two-run triple into the right-field corner. Jon Jay's RBI single in the sixth off Joe Thatcher and David Freese's seventh-inning homer against Brad Brach pulled the Cardinals to 5-4. Cameron Maybin had an RBI single off Edward Mujica in the eighth. St. Louis loaded the bases with no outs in the second but scored only one run, on Schumaker's groundout. Volquez got out the jam by getting Kozma to ground into a double play. Shortstop Everth Cabrera's error on Yadier Molina's grounder allowed Jay to score in the third. Alonso, who walked three times, hit his 34th double of the season in the eighth, breaking the San Diego rookie record set by Benito Santiago in 1987. NOTES: Wainwright's only other loss to the Padres came at San Diego on May 25, 2010, when he tied a career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings in a 1-0 loss. .. Wainwright had walked just 43 batters in his previous 28 starts over 173 2-3 innings. .. Padres LF Carlos Quentin, who was removed from Monday night's game, was out of the starting lineup Tuesday with a sore right knee. .. Cardinals RHP Kyle Lohse (14-2, 2.81 ERA) opposes Padres LHP Clayton Richard (12-12, 3.78) in the series finale Wednesday.

Padres Surge into the Wild Card Race

Don’t look now, but the Padres are now part of the conversation. After sweeping the Cardinals at home the Friars find themselves only 6.5 games out of a post-season birth. For weeks I followed, but the realist in me wouldn’t allow me to think it could happen. In all honesty, I still think it’s a long shot. The Padres only have 18 games remaining. With seven teams (Cardinals...

Friars Remain On Fire With Sweep Of World Champs.

The Padres dominance of the National League continued at Petco Park this week when they swept the defending League and World Series champion Cardinals. Logan Forsythe was outstanding over the series, getting five hits, a homer and four runs batted in, raising his average five points to .289. The Padres are now 6.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot with 18 games left on the schedule...

Security guard gets in way of ball girl's catch

A San Diego Padres ball girl was unable to catch a line drive during Tuesday night's game at Petco Park, but was probably distracted by the security guard who ran right in front of her while trying to get himself out of harm's way. It happened in the fourth inning as St. Louis Cardinals batter Pete Kozma hit a sharp line drive foul towards the left field stands. The ball...

Daily Friar 9.12.12

The past couple of games Chase Headley has been fairly quiet at the plate. He has been getting on base in some capacity, but he is leaving it up to the other guys on the team to do the damage and drive the runs in. That is exactly what Logan Forsythe has been doing for this team in the past couple games. He is getting men on base and driving them in to get the Padres the win any...

Chase Headley: Exceeder of Dreams

I don’t intend to mean-spiritedly pick on the fine folks over at Baseball Prospectus, but in this instance I can’t not make a little fun. A couple excerpts from paragraphs found on Chase Headley‘s player page: I don’t think Headley is going to have more than .150 Isolated Power. Partially due to Petco, partially because he’s not that kind of hitter. (5/5/2010) That was...

Padres Security Guard Ruins SportsCenter Top 10 Moment For Ball Girl

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured one of the San Diego Padres ball girls here on BC. A few weeks back, Padres ball girl Catalina made an insane catch. We’ve come to expect greatness from the Padres ball girls so this video is a real bummer. It’s a different ball girl, but she seems primed and ready to make a great catch. Enter cowardly security guard. This guy is...

Headley's hot streak no mirage for Padres

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By BERNIE WILSON AP Sports Writer At first, Chase Headley's power surge seemed like a mirage. He was going to cool off, right? As summer dragged on, Headley only got hotter. The San Diego Padres' third baseman has 27 homers and an NL-leading 102 RBIs, extending his career bests in both categories and breathing some life...

Daily Friar 9.11.12

You know the offense is having a good night when two guys on the team are one hit away from the cycle. Funny thing is each was holding the hit that the other needed. Cameron Maybin had the home run, double and single; Logan Forsythe had the triple, double, single. On top of all their offense, Chris Denorfia added 4 hits to the mix of his own. All this came against a team who is making...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 9-10-12

The TinCaps advance in the playoffs off the strength of 15 hits and 3 home runs. Yet again, the bullpen played a crucial role in tonight’s game as the starter, James Needy, didn’t make it through 3 innings. Besides a rocky outing for Dennis O’Grady, the TinCaps pen shut the Captains down, and only allowed 4 hits and struck out 4 over 4 innings. Hitting Prospect of the Day:...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 9-12-12

In Game 1 of the Midwest League finals, The TinCaps fall in extras to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Joe Ross made his return to Fort Wayne after going through rehab in Eugene, and performed admirably well as he struck out 5 and only allowed 2 hits over 5 innings. The TinCap bullpen that has been so rock solid in the playoffs finally faltered tonight as Luis De La Cruz walked 3 over...
