HOUSTON (AP) -- Alexi Amarista launched a grand slam for his first major league homer, capping a six-run rally in the ninth inning off Houston closer Brett Myers and lifting the San Diego Padres over the Astros 7-3 Thursday night. Andrew Cashner held Houston hitless for six innings in only his third big league start. Carlos Lee broke up the bid with a one-out single in the seventh and Brian Bogusevic followed with a homer for a 2-1 lead. The Padres trailed 3-1 going into the ninth. Third baseman Chris Johnson's second error of the game gave San Diego a run, and Carlos Quentin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, tying it with one out. With two outs, Amarista homered into the second row in right field.

Astros six man rotation won't last long

The Astros have solved the question regarding members of their five man starting rotation by extending it to a six man rotationat least for awhile. Rookie Dallas Keuchel has earned a right to continue plying his trade on the major league level while Bud Norris is now healed from a knee strain and is ready to reclaim his job. A six man rotation is not unknown, but rarely lasts very...

Padres hope Hundley can find stroke in minors

Catcher Nick Hundley, who has been in an almost season-long slump, was optioned to Triple-A Tucson by the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Switch-hitting catcher Yasmani Grandal was promoted from Tucson to take Hundley's place. Hundley during spring training signed a contract extension that is guaranteed to pay the 28-year-old $9 million through 2014. Hundley hit a career...

Norris' performance makes Astros' loss a little easier to take

As the Houston Astros' chances of pulling any sort of upset in the standings fade in the midsummer, the biggest takeaway often isn't the result. For Bud Norris in a 4-0 loss to the Cubs on Friday, that was probably the case. Not only was he healthy after missing more than two trips through the rotation because of a sprained knee and hip flexor pain, he wanted more than...

Padres recall hard-throwing righty Cashner

The Padres recalled ight-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner from Double-A San Antonio and optioned right-hander Brad Brach to Triple-A Tucson. Cashner, 25, was optioned to San Antonio on June 10 after his first start with the Padres in Milwaukee one day before. He made 27 relief appearances for the Padres this season, going 3-3 with a 3.81 ERA and 34 strikeouts and 18 walks in 28 games...

Harrell 6-hits Padres for Astros' shutout win

HOUSTON (AP) -- Lucas Harrell pitched his first complete game and left fielder J.D. Martinez threw out a runner at the plate in the ninth inning to preserve the Houston Astros' 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. Matt Downs homered and Harrell finished a six-hitter by striking out Nick Hundley with the bases loaded. The drive by Downs was one of only two...

We've seen gloves, hands, and hats. Beers and while holding babies. We've even seen non-catches because fans are on their phones. 1st foul ball in a popcorn bucket? Yes, it was a Houston Astros... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

BP Unfiltered: San Diego Might Make History by R.J. Anderson

On Tuesday night, Kip Wells started a big-league game for the first time since October 2009.  By starting for the Padres, Wells became the 13th San Diego pitcher to do so this season. Unsurprisingly, San Diego leads the league in starters used (by two), and could set history. Since the 1998 expansion, no team has used more than 17 starters in a single season. Three teams, however...

Daily Friar 6.29.12

Last night was the Padres team that I wanted to see all season. Down 2 runs in the top of the 9th inning it looked all but over. But a little rally and some RISP hitting and we put up a six spot to take a commanding lead. And who would have thought that with the bases loaded the tying run would come in with Carlos Quentin not making contact with the ball. Instead he got hit by a...

Dodgers, Padres Discussing Chase Headley

A few days ago I suggested the Dodgers should turn their attention towards Chase Headley, after missing out on Kevin Youkilis. To my surprise I see that Jon Heyman is writing about the Dodgers talking business with their division rivals about acquiring the young third baseman. Let me preface what I am about to say, by saying that I don't think Headley is the answer...

Fan uses popcorn bucket to catch foul ball (Video)

A young fan used a popcorn bucket to catch a foul ball behind home plate during Thursday night's game at Minute Maid Park with the Houston Astros hosting the San Diego Padres. Series Preview: Houston Astros (32-44) at Chicago Cubs (26-49)

When the Cubs visited Houston a month ago, the Astros were a few games below .500 and the buzz around the team was relatively positive. Few Astros fans expected the team to be very good, but they were outperforming expectations and were at least watchable. The new, saber-inclined management stole Jed Lowrie from the Red Sox in a reverse Ed Wade move, trading an overvalued Veteran...

Astros-Cubs Preview

Paul Maholm is winless in his last eight starts for the Chicago Cubs, while Houston Astros starter Bud Norris has failed to win in his last four. Both pitchers, however, have had some success against the other's club, and they'll oppose each other Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. Maholm (4-6, 5.38 ERA) is 11-6 with a 3.31 ERA in 20 career...
