Catcher Nick Hundley, who has been in an almost season-long slump, was optioned to Triple-A Tucson by the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Switch-hitting catcher Yasmani Grandal was promoted from Tucson to take Hundley's place.

Hundley during spring training signed a contract extension that is guaranteed to pay the 28-year-old $9 million through 2014.

Hundley hit a career-high .288 last season with nine homers and 29 RBI in 82 games. But he was hitting .166 this season with 51 strikeouts in 193 at-bats. He started the season by going 0-for-21 and reached a season-high .254 on April 27 after a 15-for-38 streak.

But he has hit .127 since and was batting .114 with runners in scoring position.

"Obviously, it's not my choice," Hundley said after the Padres' 10-2 loss in Colorado on Friday night. "It's not the road you want to travel, but it's not always going to be perfect. I want to be here. I feel very fortunate to be here.

"I have to take a step back and get it right because it hasn't been right this year. I can't stand here and deny it. And I appreciate the fact that they were still throwing me out there when I wasn't playing well."

During his offensive woes, Hundley was still earning high marks from Padres pitchers for his game control.

Grandal, 23, was hitting .335 with six homers and 35 RBI at Triple-A. Grandal, first baseman Yonder Alonso and right-handed pitcher Edinson Volquez were three of the four players the Padres received from Cincinnati last offseason for right-handed starter Mat Latos.
