While a lot of folks are eagerly anticipating the planned renovations to the decrepit Wrigley Field — Lance Berkman is probably part of that contingent — some folks with a more of a nose for nostalgia (as it were) aren’t as excited that the longtime home of the Chicago Cubs will be losing some of its trademark and quirky charm through the renovation process. Among those folks is San Diego Padres manager Bud Black. With the Padres wrapping up a four-game series with the Cubbies on Thursday at Wrigley, Black claims he will miss many of the subtle qualities of Wrigley Field that make it such a unique ballpark amid all the new and lavish baseball stadiums throughout Major League Baseball. Via a Chicago Tribune report: “I sort of like the clubhouse, because it’s different than what we’re used to now,” Black said. “I sort of like the coziness of it. And actually, the clubhouse staff do a really good job of taking care of the players and coaches and everyone who uses the clubhouse. “I think when you come to this park, all of its nuances are its charm. I like the walkway (from the clubhouse to the field). I like the eight turns. I like how it smells, which isn’t very good, but I like it. I do.” Black admits he’s “different,” and that he doesn’t conform to most managers’ thinking on things. “I’ve said it before, I love Petco Park, AT&T (Park), Pittsburgh has got a great field …  there are some beautiful ballparks, and I love them,” he said. “(But) I like this one. I like this dugout.” One cannot fault Black for the sense of comfort, nostalgia and history Wrigley Field provides him, but then again, expressing how much he loves Wrigley Field by praising the putrid stench of its walkways? That’s an odd choice. The post Padres manager Bud Black will miss the intoxicating stench of Wrigley Field appeared first on Sportress of Blogitude.
