The San Diego Padres have signed shortstop Ronny Cedeno to a minor league contract in case All-Star Everth Cabrera is suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball as part of its investigation of the Biogenesis drug clinic.
Cedeno is scheduled to be in the lineup for Double-A Lake Elsinore on Saturday night.
Both general manager Josh Byrnes and manager Bud Black confirm the move was made in case Cabrera is suspended on Monday.
Cedeno, 30, most recently was with the Houston Astros, who designated him for assignment last Sunday.
Besides the Astros, Cedeno also has played for the Chicago Cubs, Seattle, Pittsburgh and the New York Mets.
The switch-hitting Cabrera leads the NL with 37 stolen bases. Last year, he led the NL with a career-high 44. He's hitting .285 with four homer and 29 RBIs.

Sorry for the absence in the Round-Up, I’ve been out of town for the past few days. Time to catch up! Matt Andriese and Max Fried both had outstanding starts for the T-Pads and the TinCaps, respectively. Lake Elsinore’s pitching staff was completely destroyed; they allowed 26 runs.

Offense was hard to come by for every team in the Padre farm except for the TinCaps. Good pitching, however, was plentiful. Pete Kelich had another successful start for the AZL Padres while Matt Wisler dominated the RoughRiders to earn his 6th victory with San Antonio.

Well, it finally happened. Through all the speculation and wonder, the trivial concern and thought, the inevitable suspension of Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera is official and the veteran All-star will serve a 50-game punishment – effectively ending Cabrera’s 2013 season. Cabrera was having an all-star caliber season this year as well, leading the National League in stolen bases...

Well as predicted last night, the Padres broadcast (Dick Enberg) would not shut up about how great the Yankees are. The good news is that your lowly Padres were able to beat the Evil Empire in very convincing fashion. It’s always fun to show up a team that is supposedly better than you are. It’s even more fun to do it when there is a sellout crowd watching, and since it’s New...
