Some of the parties involved in the trade that kicked off the New York Mets offseason have begun to cash in for 2012. According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Mets have avoided arbitration with their new set-up man Ramon Ramirez by agreeing to a 1-year deal worth $2.65 million.

On the flip side, former Mets centerfielder Angel Pagan, who was sent to San Francisco in exchange for Ramirez and outfielder Andres Torres, received a one-year pact worth $4.85 million from the Giants yesterday. Apparently Angel can also earn an additional $150,000 in incentives ( $50,000 each for 550, 600 and 650 plate appearances) according to the Associate Press.

Pagan batted .262 with seven home runs and 56 RBIs last season and rumors also began to swirl that his attitude was almost as big a problem as his performance. The Mets were quick to move on from the 30-year-old outfielder despite memories of his strong 2010 campaign, which saw him hit .290 with 11 homers and 69 RBIs. Seeing Pagan get close to $5 million makes me like this trade even more, but then again if Angel bounces back to his 2010 numbers he will certainly be worth it.
Even if Torres struggles atop the Mets line-up, Ramirez still has the potential to be the gem of this deal and I’m looking forward to seeing him lock things down in the late innings for New York this season.
