The Tampa Bay Rays have made their biggest splash of the offseason, signing Pat Burrell to a two year $16 million contract, ESPN's Jayson Stark reports.

The deal is not yet official and Burrell is scheduled to soon take a physical.

This signing helps the Rays greatly, as there was a hole in the DH slot following the departures of former Met, Cliff Floyd, and Rocco Baldelli.

The 32 year old Burrell has a career batting average of .257 along with 251 home runs.

Burrell will definitely aid the Rays in hitting left-handed pitching, which is an area the team struggled in this past season.

With this signing, the Rays have made it known that they do not intend to concede defeat and hand the AL East over the division favorites, the New York Yankees, just yet
