Found March 17, 2009 on Another Cubs Blog:
One of the very few unsettled roster spots for the Cubs is the back-up catching position. Mark Johnson was considered one of the three candidates when spring training began, but it’s now down to Koyie Hill and Paul Bako. Hill is projected to be better than Bako in 2009, but those involve samples over the last few years that are small and/or unreliable. So far this spring, Koyie Hill has out-hit Bako. Hill: 8-24, 2 R, 4 RBI, 3 2B, 3 BB, 4 K Bako: 4-20, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, 4 K Neither are particularly good defensive catchers, but Hill may be more familiar with the staff than Bako. I don’t think that really matters that much since Bako has had time to presumably make himself familiar with the staff. Bako is due $725,000, but is not guaranteed a spot on the active roster. If the Cubs were to release him they’d only pay about $100,000. Koyie Hill makes the league minimum. Koyie Hill is the better hitter and since there is likely little difference in their defensive abilities, that’s who I would choose. What about you guys?
